West Chester, Pennsylvania - Millersville baseball hadn't lost a PSAC East series since 2012, but the impressive run ended at 33 Sunday when West Chester battered Millersville's starting pitching for a combined 14 runs in a doubleheader sweep by scores of 6-2 and 16-4. The Golden Rams took three of four games in the series to improve to 17-6 overall (9-3 PSAC East) while Millersville dipped two games below .500 in PSAC East play (5-7) for the first time since 2012.
With 11 runs in the series opener and 16 in the finale, West Chester became the first PSAC East team since Bloomsburg in 2009 to score double-digit runs twice on Millersville in the same season. Millersville has given up more than 10 runs in three of its last five PSAC East games after allowing double-digit runs just three times over the previous 143 division games.
Aside from
Tyler Yankosky's near-no-hitter in game two of the series, Millersville's starters combined to allow 17 runs in 12 innings of work. On Sunday,
Cordell Shannon gave up 11 hits over six innings in Sunday's opening, and three pitchers combined to give up 15 hits and seven walks in game two.
David Manasek lasted just an inning in game two, surrendering eight runs, five of which were earned, on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman.
Millersville travels to USciences for a pair of non-conference games on Tuesday.
GAME 1
Millersville struck first on a
Dan Neff squeeze in the top of the third. But three singles and a walk in the bottom of the inning put West Chester in front 2-1, and Millersville rarely threatened again. Anthony Salamone hit a two-run homer in the fourth to build the lead to 4-1, and while
Chas McCormick hit his fifth home run of the season in the sixth, Millersville could get no closer. West Chester tacked on two more runs in the sixth, using a RBI triple from Robert Knox and a sacrifice fly.
The first three hitters in West Chester's lineup reached base a combined eight times, and Salomone, the No. 8 hitter, went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Millersville mustered just five hits against Mike Ciopolla. Cipolla improved to 2-2 after giving up two runs on four hits and no walks in 5 1/3.
GAME 2
The 12-run margin of defeat was Millersville's worst since 2010. In the bottom of the first, three of West Chester's first five batters doubled. Six consecutive Golden Rams reached base in one stretch, and the home team built a 7-0 lead. That one inning ended Manasek's day. Since allowing a total of eight hits, no walks and no earned runs in three consecutive starts from March 5-25, Manasek has lasted just one inning in each of his last two starts, giving up a total of 13 runs.
The Millersville bullpen fared no better. Clay Harwick hit a three-run homer in the second, and the Rams put up 16 runs in just four innings. It finished the game with 16 hits including a 3-for-3 outing by Shane Dressler, which included three doubles and four runs scored.
Millersville scored runs on a
Manning Brookens single in the second, Brendan White and
John Turner singles in the fifth, and an
Eric Callahan ground out in the sixth. White went 2-for-2 with a RBI.
