Mansfield, Pennsylvania - Millersville baseball won Monday's PSAC East doubleheader opener 12-5 behind
Mitch Stoltzfus' two homers and four RBIs but dropped game two by a 13-0 score, giving the programs a series split at two wins apiece.
Millersville totaled 12 hits--five of them home runs--in the opener. Along with Stoltzfus' two,
Ben Snyder hit one, and freshman
Cole Friese and
Ted Williams hit the first of their careers. But the bats went quiet in game two. The loss marked the first time since the 2015 NCAA Atlantic Regional championship game that Millersville was shut out, and the 13 runs were the most scored against Millersville since March 26, 2016--a span of 61 games.
Millersville is now 18-8 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC East, having evenly split each of the first two division series. The Marauders face division-leading West Chester on Friday and Saturday.
GAME 1
Millersville had not scored more than six runs in its previous seven games but scored five runs in the third. Stoltzfus and Friese both hit two-run homers in the inning. Stoltzfus added a solo blast in the fifth, and the Marauders posted five more runs in the sixth.
Chas McCormick and Stoltzfus drove in runs with RBI singles, and Snyder hit a solo homer. Williams added a shot to right field in the seventh.
Millersville's starter
Cordell Shannon lasted 3 2/3, allowing three earned runs and five total.
Bobby Dorta came on in the fourth, and after giving up two hits and a walk, he got the final out of the inning.
Matt Ulrich, who earned the save, pitched a shutout inning, and
Stephen Muscovitch tossed a pair of shutout innings to close the win.
Each of the first four hitters in Millersville's lineup scored at least two runs, and the four hitters combined for eight of the team's 12 hits.
GAME 2
David Manasek entered Monday's start riding a streak of 21 consecutive innings without an earned run allowed. But he completed just one inning against a Mansfield club that scored one in the first and seven in the second. A walk, hit batsman and walk started the inning. A fielding error then opened the door for Mansfield to pile on.
Drew Miller entered and fared no better. Tanner Klein, Mansfield's starting pitcher, helped himself with a three-run homer. The Mountaineers sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
The damage was done, and Millersville failed to mount a rally against Klein. Klein gave up five hits and walked five. Millersville put a runner in scoring position in five of the seven innings but stranded 10 base runners.
Williams led Millersville with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate.
