Yankosky's gem helps Marauders to game two win

Millersville, Pennsylvania - Freshman Tyler Yankosky hardly looked like a freshman on the mound Saturday. After watching Millersville give up two leads in the 11-6 game one loss, Yankosky stifled the PSAC East-leading West Chester Golden Rams in game two. The rookie right-hander came within one strike of a no-hitter, and even with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, he coolly nailed down the Marauders' 4-2 victory.

Prior to Saturday, Yankosky's longest career start had been the 5 1/3 innings. Yankosky carried a no-hit bid for 6 2/3, and had two strikes on Drew Jarmuz. Jarmuz broke up the no-hitter with a double, and Nick Bateman ended the shutout with a two-run single. The next batter got a hit as well, but rather than go to the bullpen, Millersville coach Jon Shehan stayed with the rookie. And Yankosky delivered.

He needed only one pitch Corey Webb--a fly out to right field--to lock up a 2-0 record and help the Marauders improve to 19-9 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC East. Yankosky's performance was aided by three Mitch Stoltzfus RBIs. The Marauders needed a start like that after a game one loss in which they led 3-0 after one inning and 5-4 after a Chas McCormick homer in the fourth. West Chester took full advantage of six walks and five hit batsmen. Yankosky allowed just one free pass and was two over the minimum through 6 2/3.

Millersville and West Chester have now evenly split the last 12 meetings, and the series is 20-20 since 2008. The clubs complete the four-game series Sunday at West Chester. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

GAME 1
Dan Neff's leadoff jump-started the Millersville offense to three runs on two hits and three walks in the bottom of the first. But West Chester, facing Millersville's 5-0 Eli Nabholz, scored at least one run in each of the next five innings. Trailing 4-3 in the fourth, McCormick hit a two-run blast--his fourth of the season--to momentarily put the Marauders on top. West Chester, however, answered immediately with a run in the fifth and broke open the game in the sixth.

Nabholz had not allowed more than three runs in any of his first eight starts and had surrendered just one run over his first 15 innings pitched at Cooper Park. West Chester scored five on the sophomore, using seven hits, four walks and three hit batsmen. Two of those seven hits were home runs. Nabholz, however, left with the game tied. Mike Mock (2-1), who had not allowed a run in his eight prior appearances, gave up four runs in the sixth.

Stoltzfus drove in a run with a double in the seventh, but it was not enough. McCormick reached base all four times and scored three runs.

GAME 2
Yankosy gave up three hits and struck out five for his second career win. Eric Close took his first loss of the season, working the full six innings while striking out eight.

Stoltzfus drove in a runs with a sacrifice fly in the first, a groundout in the third and a double in the fifth. McCormick went 2-for-3 with a walk, steal and two runs scored. Ben Snyder drove in a run as part of a two-run fifth inning that gave Yankosky some breathing room at 4-0.

In three starts against PSAC East foes, Yankosky owns a 2.12 ERA with 16 strikeouts and seven hits allowed in 17 innings.
