Millersville survives late rally by The Rock to win, 9-8

Millersville, Pennsylvania -- The Millersville women's lacrosse team won 9-8 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Slippery Rock University Saturday after surviving The Rock's late second-half rally.

The Marauders led 9-5 after freshman Noelle Smith scored with 14 minutes remaining in the half. Slippery Rock battled back over the next 10 minutes while the Marauders failed to find the back of the net. With 4:07 remaining, Slippery Rock scored and cut Millersville's lead to one. The Marauders won the corresponding draw control and played keep away from The Rock for almost three minutes.

The Rock forced a key turnover in their defensive end and immediately transitioned to offense with a minute remaining. The Rock swarmed the Millersville defense and passed the ball around to find an opening for an equalizing goal. Sophomore Natalie Sukanick forced a turnover and scooped up the groundball with 23 seconds remaining. The reigning PSAC Freshman of the Year sprinted towards The Rock's defense and converted the clear attempt before turning the ball over with 10 seconds remaining. Slippery Rock fired off one last desperation shot with four seconds remaining but the shot was wide.

Millersville's win over the fourth-best team in the PSAC improved its record to 7-8 and 4-6 in the conference. The Marauders will likely need to win out for an opportunity to make the PSAC playoffs. The Marauders travel to No. 20 Lock Haven University before closing out the season at home against Gannon, which ranks 12th out of 13 in the conference.

Junior Callie Kavanaugh scored a team high three goals for the Marauders while freshman Sarah Leverentz ranked second with two goals. Junior Sabrina Fusco netted one goal and extended her streak to 15 games with at least one goal scored. Sophomore Bryana Weston-Wyatt stepped up big for the Marauders and saved 9 shots on goal including six saves on free position shots.

The Marauders' next game at Lock Haven is Wednesday, April 26 at 4 p.m. The final game of the season and senior day is Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. against Gannon.
