Shippensburg, Pennsylvania -- The Millersville women's tennis team earned their second straight victory in a week after defeating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg University 6-3 Saturday.
Millersville won two of the three doubles matches and only narrowly lost the third. The doubles team of sophomores
Katina Jones and
Sarah Sambrick cruised to an 8-1 victory. Junior
Kimberly Theophile and sophomore
Kelley Hershey won a contentious 9-8 (7-5) set. Sophomore
Jessica Soullaird and freshman
Molly Kulp battled but lost 8-6.
Millersville experienced similar success in the singles as they did in the doubles. Jones won two straight competitive sets 6-3 and 6-4. Sambrick also won in two straight sets as she swept her opponent 6-0 and 6-0. Theophile grinded out a tough win in three sets. She won her first set 6-2 before losing the second set 4-6, but she won the third set 7-6 (7-2). Hershey dropped her first set 5-7 before rallying to 7-5 and 7-6 (7-2) victories to win her match.
The Millersville women's tennis team improved to 2-3 in the PSAC but narrowly missed an invitation to the PSAC women's tennis playoffs. The team returns to the court April 17 at Elizabethtown College.
