Marauders grind out a comeback win against PSAC rival Seton Hill

Millersville, Pennsylvania -- The Millersville women's lacrosse team earned a gritty 11-9 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Seton Hill University Sunday after successfully overcoming two separate SHU multi-goal leads.

SHU dominated possession during the beginning of the game. The Griffins compiled a 3-0 lead in the opening seven minutes while the Marauders recorded one shot. However, the Marauders would begin to capitalize on their opportunities. A charging foul was called on SHU during a potential scoring opportunity, and Millersville's immediate transition offense ended with junior Callie Kavanaugh cutting the score to 3-1 with 14 minutes remaining in the half.

Sophomore Nathalie Sell scored her first goal of the season to cut SHU's lead to 3-2 with 14:44 remaining. The teams would vie for possession for nine minutes before opportunity presented itself again for the Marauders. An SHU foul led to Kavanaugh firing a free position goal into the back of the net and tying the Griffins with 5:43 remaining in the half. However, the stalemate would end two minutes later when SHU's Nicole Nath scored and put the Griffins back on top 4-3.

The Marauders would strike again in the final minute of the first half. SHU's clear attempt was shut down in the midfield, and junior Sabrina Fusco fed the ball to senior Renee Landis who buried the equalizer. After a contentious draw following the Landis goal, the Griffins would race out on attack and SHU's Keagan Pontious put her team back on top 5-4 as the final seconds of the first half ticked off the clock.

The Griffins would take advantage of an early second half mistake by the Marauders. SHU's Tristen Hanke would fire a free position shot passed senior Shannon Davis to give the Griffins a 6-4 lead. Five minutes later, Sell would find herself lined up for a free position attempt, and she would cut the Griffins' lead back to one. Two minutes later, Landis would assist Fusco during a transition opportunity to tie the game up at 6-6 with 17:59 remaining.

Another contentious draw would follow a Millersville equalizer, and SHU's Katelyn Cressman would score ending the 40 second stalemate. However, with 13:57 remaining in the game, Fusco would assist another Renee Landis goal to once again equalize the score. The Marauders would stay aggressive, and, 50 seconds after tying the score, freshman Sarah Leverentz would give Millersville their first lead of the game.

Immediately after the Leverentz goal, Seton Hill took a timeout to recollect themselves, and, following a successful draw, would complete two passes down field and score their own equalizer 12 seconds after the Leverentz goal. Almost five minutes would tick off the clock before sophomore Erin Fagan broke the stalemate off senior Jamie Damirgian's assist.

Up 9-8, Millersville would commit to methodical possession on offense. The Marauders would rack up two more goals by passing until a runner had an open lane to catch a pass and charge the goal. With 5:38 remaining in the game, Millersville lead the Griffins 11-8. Seton Hill would muster one last answer to cut the lead to 11-9 with 4:18 remaining, but the Marauders would close out the game with their lead intact.

The offensive duo of Landis and Fusco are clicking, and they have combined for 18 points in their first two games of the season. Eight Marauders have recorded multiple goals in their first two games, further emphasizing head coach Mia Hall's plan of offense from multiple avenues.

The Marauders return to action Tuesday, March 7 against Shepherd University. The game is at 4 pm at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
