Millersville, Pennsylvania - Millersville starting pitcher
Eli Nabholz struck out 12 over eight shutout innings, and Millersville won Friday's series opener against Kutztown 1-0 after a walk-off walk drawn by
Chas McCormick in the bottom of the eighth. The Marauders nearly pulled off some late-game heroics in game two as well, but Kutztown held on for a 4-3 win.
Millersville's record moved to 15-5 (1-1 PSAC East) after the split while Kutztown went to 10-8 (1-1 PSAC East). Following the game one shutout, Millersville had won four of five games via shutout, two in a row by 1-0 scores and improved to 3-0 in extra-inning games.
The weekend schedule has changed with Kutztown coming to Millersville again on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch for game three of the series is at 1 p.m.
GAME 1
Nabholz matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts and he surrendered just four hits without walking a batter to improve to 4-0 on the season. Nabholz has now struck out at least eight batters in four of his last five starts. Nabholz faced the minimum over the first four innings. Ben Rottet opened the game with a single but was promptly erased with a 1-6-3 double play. Nabholz found himself in trouble again in the fifth after back-to-back, one-out singles. But a 4-6-3 double play ended the jam.
Kutztown's Mike Kammerer matched Nabholz until the eighth.
Grayson Miller opened the frame with a single.
Ted Williams put down a sacrifice bunt, but Kammerer's throw to first was low, and pinch running
Cole Friese raced to third. Kutztown went to Ryan Clow, but another error on a
Dan Neff ground ball loaded the bases with no outs. McCormick then drew a full-count walk to bring home the winning run.
Both teams mustered just four hits.
Mitch Stoltzfus reached base twice with a walk and a single.
GAME 2
Kutztown opened game two with a 4-0 lead, receiving a RBI double in the second and a two-run homer in the fourth from Mike Milazzo. Millersville, however, charged back with a three-run fifth. McCormick brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and Stoltzfus and
David Summerfield delivered back-to-back RBI singles. With the bases still loaded,
Jimmy Cain laced a sinking liner to center, but Ben Eppley made a diving grab to keep Kutztown's lead intact.
The Marauders went down in order in the sixth, and in the seventh,
Dan Neff led off with a single to center. A bunt moved the senior into scoring position but back-to-back fly outs to left off the bats of
Ben Snyder and Stoltzfus thwarted the comeback.
Anthony Atticks (1-1) picked up the win for Kutztown after allowing three runs on two hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. Doug Conrad scored his first save with 2 1/3 shutout innings. Millersville's starter
Cordell Shannon (1-2) surrendered four runs on nine hits in 3 1/3. Four members of the bullpen combined for 3 2/3 shutout innings, allowing only two hits.
Mike Mock struck out the side in the seventh.
Summerfield reached base three times with two singles and a walk.
