Millersville, Pennsylvania - Millersville had managed just six total runs in its previous four games and was facing a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning of Saturday's series finale with PSAC East rival Kutztown. The Golden Bears had already won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3, and was threatening to hand Millersville its first PSAC East series loss since 2012. But in the sixth inning, Millersville found an unlikely hero in freshman pinch hitter
Jake Mackara.
An offense struggling to score received a shot of life when Mackara smacked a two-run double, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving the Marauders a 4-2 lead. Millersville went on to win the game 6-2 to improve to 16-6 overall and 2-2 in PSAC East play. Mackara had just five plate appearances prior to the at bat.
While Kutztown became the first team since May 2013 to beat Millersville in back-to-back games at Cooper Park, Millersville's finale victory prevented the Marauders from losing their first divisional series since 2012. Millersville has also not lost a series to Kutztown since 2007. Three of the four games in this weekend's series were decided by one run.
Because of field conditions, all four games of the series were played at Millersville. Millersville's starting pitchers--
Tyler Yankosky in game one and
David Manasek in game two--combined to toss 12 1/3 innings, allowing just six hits, one earned run with 12 strikeouts.
Millersville travels to Mansfield on Friday, March 31 and returns home on April 1 for a doubleheader with the Mountaineers.
GAME 1
Freshman
Tyler Yankosky turned in a career outing, allowing just one run on two hits over 5 1/3, and left the game with Millersville leading, 1-0. The Marauders had broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by
Ben Snyder, but in the bottom of the inning, Yankosky was pulled after issuing a one-out walk. Reliever
Matt Ulrich induced a ground ball to the only batter he faced, but
Grayson Miller was unable to make a play on the slow roller, putting runners on first and second.
Millersville's
Mike Mock was called from the pen for the second time in as many days. While Mock struck out the side to save Millersville's win on Friday, he gave up a single to Ben Eppley, which tied the game. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Mock issued a full-count walk to Collin Bishop. It was the first time in Mock's seven appearances that he did not record a win or save.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Millersville mustered only one base runner when
Manning Brookens reached on an error. Anthony DeVito nailed down his first save of the season with a strike out.
The teams combined for seven hits with Millersville totaling just three.
GAME 2
With the aid of a Millersville throwing error and a passed ball, Kutztown pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Marauders' starter
David Manasek responded, however. He retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced, and only one Kutztown runner reached score position over the final six innings. Manasek struck out seven and won his third consecutive start. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 21 innings.
Millersville tied the game in the fourth, using a RBI single from
Jimmy Cain, and
David Summerfield scored on a wild pitch. Mackara broke open the game in sixth with his pinch hit double.
Chas McCormick followed with a two-run double of his own, giving Manasek plenty of breathing room over the final six outs.
Summerfield reached base three times and scored two runs with a single, double and walk. McCormick went 2-for-4 with a single and double.
