Winston-Salem State - The fifth-ranked Millersville Marauders broke a 1-1 tie with seven late-inning runs and went on to top Winston-Salem State 8-1 on opening day.
Millersville (1-0) received two hits and two RBIs from
Dan Neff and
Chas McCormick. Neff also stole two bases. Redshirt freshman
Jimmy Cain recorded a double and single in his Marauder debut.
A trio of true freshmen, also playing in their first collegiate game, started Millersville's big ninth inning.
Manning Brookens led off with a single, and shortstop
Eric Callahan drew a walk.
Cole Friese singled to the load the bases, bringing Neff, the leadoff hitter, to the plate. Winston-Salem State starting pitcher Kanoa Hironaka (0-1) remained on the mound and plunked Neff to push the go-ahead run across.
Ted Williams plated a run with a ground out, and McCormick singled in Friese and Neff. Millersville went on to send 12 batters to the plate in the inning, and seven of the first eight scored runs.
The Marauders took the game's first lead in the fifth. Callahan, the second batter of the inning, was hit by a pitch and stole second base. He then scored from second on Neff's RBI single. Winston-Salem State tied the game in the sixth on a RBI single from Ivan Acuna.
Millersville's starting pitcher
Cordell Shannon received a no decision despite a strong six-inning performance. Shannon scattered five hits, walked just one and struck out four. He also overcame three errors, including two in the opening inning. Sophomore
Kyle Peterson registered the win following three dominant innings of relief work. He gave up just one hit and fanned six. He struck out the side in the eighth and also the first two batters on the ninth.
Millersville is back in action against Winston-Salem State Saturday.
