Marauders close season with win at Cheyney
2/25/2017 6:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Cheyney, Pennsylvania - Trailing Cheyney by two with less than a minute to play, Millersville received four points from Marcus Adkison and a pair of free throws from Jordan Greene to score a 79-75 road victory.
Adkison led all scorers with 22 points, sinking 4-of-5 3-pointers and 6-of-6 free throws. His late buckets were key in preventing Millersville (9-17, 8-14 PSAC) from squandering a double-digit second half lead for the second time in as many games. The Marauders built a 14-point lead (65-51) after an Adkison 3-pointer with 9:20 to play, and led by 10 with seven minutes left. Just three days prior, Millersville led West Chester by 15 points with less than 10 minutes to play but lost, 80-75.
Cheyney used a 13-2 run to even the score at 70-70, and even took a 75-73 lead on two free throws from Rafiq Marshall with 59 seconds on the clock. Adkison tied the game on a jumper 18 seconds later. Cheyney took the clock down to 14 seconds before Marshall committed an offensive foul. Forced to foul to stop the clock, the Wolves sent Adkison to the line, who knocked down both free throws to give Millersville a 77-75 lead. Cheyney put the ball in the hands of Khaalis Carter, but his driving attempt missed, and Jordan Greene hauled in Millersville's most important defensive rebound of the game. He was fouled immediately, and Greene put the Marauder win away with two more free throws.
Greene totaled nine points and six rebounds. Scott Slade Jr. received a start in the final game of his Marauder career and delivered 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed five boards in 25 minutes of action. Fellow senior Cornell Yarde II totaled 11 points, and Markeith Mont recorded nine points and seven rebounds.
Millersville shot 10-of-23 from the 3-point line. Adkison's four threes boosted his season total to 77, putting him a tie with Kevin Towns (1995-96) for the seventh-most in a single season at Millersville. Adkison made more threes than any other Marauder since Gerald Redding's 78 in 2002-03.
With Casey Stitzel in his first season at the helm, Millersville improved its win total by five and won four more conference games. Millersville graduates four seniors in Slade, Yarde, Mont and Tommy Patterson. Adkison, Conrad Chambers, Amadou Kaba and Jordan Greene are expected to return after combining for 84 starts. Adkison (15.4), Chambers (12.5) and Greene (11.5) were three of Millersville's top four scorers.
