Shippensburg, Pa. - Millersville did exactly what it needed to do to stay in contention for the PSAC Tournament Wednesday: win. The Marauders went on the road and rallied from a first set loss by taking three straight sets for a needed 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20) win.
Millersville (17-9, 8-8 PSAC) pulled its conference record to an even 8-8, trailing Edinboro by one match win for the final playoff spot. Two matches remain for both Millersville and Edinboro, and the Marauders must win out while Edinboro must lose two in a row as the Fighting Scots hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Millersville faced a tall task heading into the final five matches of the season as all five were on the road. Millersville has won its last two, and Wednesday's win over Shippensburg (19-10, 11-5 PSAC) was its first over the Raiders since 2014.
Erin Harman and
Lindsey Blevins led the charge for Millersville. Harman's double-double included 16 kills (.224) and 22 digs. Blevins totaled 14 kills.
Katie Laughman registered 42 assists and 16 digs--her fifth match with 40-plus assists this season.
Shippensburg totaled 15 kills to Millersville's eight in the first set, but the Marauders reversed the course of the match mid-way through set two. Holding a 10-9 lead, Millersville used five consecutive Shippensburg attack errors to build a six-point lead. The Marauders led by as many as six and evened the match at 1-1 with back-to-back kills from Harman and
Kelsi Ceriani.
Millersville also had to overcome a slow start to set three. Shippensburg scored five of the set's first six points and led 7-4 before Millersville turned to Blevins for its offense. Blevins recorded four kills in a five-point Millersville. Harman added five more kills the rest of the way as the Marauders pulled away for a 25-20 win and 2-1 lead.
The Marauders closed the match in dominating fashion, out-hitting Shippensburg .152 to -.023 in the fourth. The deciding run came with Millersville holding a slight 9-7 advantage. Blevins struck twice, setting off a 6-0 Millersville run. Millersville built the lead to as many as eight, and had match-point at 24-16 before Shippensburg scored four unanswered. But again, Blevins halted the comeback with a kill.
Needing two wins and some help to reach the postseason, Millersville first travels to Central Division-leading Pitt-Johnstown Friday before closing the regular season at Lock Haven Saturday.
