California, Pa. - Millersville women's volleyball defeated California (Pa.) for the first time since 1997 Saturday, and the win couldn't have come at a better time. Millersville's sweep (27-25, 25-16, 31-29), in which two of the sets went to extra points, closed the gap in the race for the final PSAC Tournament spot on CalU and Edinboro.
Millersville boosted its record to 16-9 overall and 7-8 in league play and now own the head-to-head tiebreaker of CalU while trailing Edinboro's 8-7 record by one win with three matches to play. Each of Millersville's final three matches are against Central Division opponents.
The win was only the fifth for Millersville in 21 all-time meetings against the Vulcans.
Kelsi Ceriani (11),
Erin Harman (11) and
Lindsey Blevins (10) all recorded double-digit kills, and
Katie Laughman recorded 37 helpers.
The Marauders win in comeback fashion in the first set, setting the stage for the sweep. The Marauders trailed by two as late as 23-21, but a kill by Harman and CalU attack error forced a tie. The teams traded points from there. CalU twice held set point, but was staved off by an error and a Harman error. Harman's fifth kill of the set evened the score at 25-25, and
Haley Butler closed out the Vulcans with back-to-back kills.
The Marauders rolled in set two, totaling 11 kills and holding CalU to six and a .000 attack percentage. Millersville scored nine of the set's final 11 points.
The deciding third set, however, featured 12 tied scores and three lead changes. Millersville trailed by as many as four on two occasions but rallied twice. CalU had set point at 24-23, but a service error extended the match. California took a 29-28 lead before Harman, Blevins and Ceriani sent home three-consecutive kills for the win.
Millersville travels to Shippensburg, Lock Haven and Pitt-Johnstown to close out the regular season.
