GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville men's basketball faced a stiff challenge last weekend in the season-opening Joe Retton Classic hosted by Fairmont State. The Marauders scored a 107-99 double overtime victory over a Notre Dame College team that had four returning starters and a preseason All-American, and then were edged 92-89 by a Fairmont State program that had played for the national championship in 2016-17. The performance netted Millersville four votes in the most recent D2SIDA Atlantic Region Men's Basketball Poll, just missing the top 10.
• Millersville plays its final non-conference game Wednesday before heading into PSAC action this weekend. Wilmington and Millersville have evenly split the last six meetings, and home court is everything. Wilmington has never won at Pucillo Gymnasium and Millersville has not won at Wilmington since 1997-98. The home team has won the last seven match-ups. Expect a close game as well. Of the 10 meetings since 1994-95, eight games have been decided by five points or fewer. Wilmington won last season's game by five at home. Millersville rolled to a 99-76 win at home in January 2015. However, no player from that team is on this season's roster, and only four players are back from last season.
• Millersville's win over Notre Dame was its first season-opening win since 2011 and the 107 points scored were also the most since 2011. Millersville has won 10 of the last 11 home openers dating back to 2005-06.
• Millersville's three healthy returnees made a big impact in the opening three games.
Conrad Chambers scored double-figures in both games and scored a career-high 29 points in the opener. He sank 15 of 16 free throws. Chambers was outstanding at the free throw line last year as well, hitting 81.7 on a team-high 115 attempts.
•
Marcus Adkison led the Marauders with 25 points against Fairmont State. Now in his second season with Millersville, Adkison has shown the ability to score in bunches. Adkison now has nine 20-point games and a pair of 30-point games in 28 games as a Marauder. He made three threes in both games last weekend, which was exactly what he averaged last season when he made the seventh-most threes in a single season in school history.
• It is becoming evident that
Casey Stitzel's teams take care of the ball. Last season, the Marauders ranked third in the PSAC in turnover margin, committing just 12.9 per game. Through two games this season, Millersville ranks second in the PSAC with a plus-8 margin. Millersville has totaled just 10 turnovers per game while forcing 18. Millersville's 22 steals against Notre Dame were the most for the program in the Statcrew Era which dates back to 1999.
• Caden Najdawi made an immediate impact, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double against Notre Dame. He was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week on Monday. Additionally, his classmate James Sullivan scored 14 while playing all 40 minutes against Fairmont State. Andre Watkins scored 12 against Notre Dame. Junior newcomer Mark Perry also had a big week, scoring 20 points with five boards and five steals against Notre Dame and then scoring 10 points with five boards against FSU.
SCOUTING WILMINGTON
• Wilmington is coming off a 19-10 season in which it reached its conference tournament quarterfinals. It was the best record in program history. Wilmington lost leading scorer Tyaire Ponzo-Meeks to graduation as well as starters Drew Johnson II (9.1 ppg) and Tajee Almon (5.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg). The top returners are Nick Richards and Omari Dill-Pettiford. Richards shot 50.8 percent from the field and averaged 18.2 points per game in 2016-17. He was named All-CACC Second Team last season.
• Richards is averaging 18 points per game in his first two games of 2017-18, leading an offense that has five players averaging in double figures while shooting a 38.6 percent from the field and 62.7 percent from the line. Wilmington has taken 57 threes in the first two games, making at least nine in both games.
