Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team showcased its offensive prowess on Saturday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium in defeating Seton Hill, 2-0. The win was the fifth in a row for the Marauders, who controlled every single aspect of the home game against the Griffins.
Maci Langone and
Lexi Robison each scored to help propel the Marauders to 8-3 (4-1 PSAC) on the season.
It was also Millersville's fifth straight shutout and thus helped the Marauders to continue their streak of what is now 366 minutes without allowing a goal.
The saying "offense was the best defense" could not apply more than it did Saturday. Millersville's defense was truly its offense and that was true all day long. It rarely let the ball get past the middle of the field, maintaining constant pressure on Jane Eberhardt (Seton Hill's goalkeeper) for all 70 minutes.
Marauder head coach
Shelly Behrens was impressed with the effort, noting the duress this team has been under with this section of their schedule containing a game on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and Monday.
"As far as our effort, zero complaints," said Behrens. "To execute, we weren't as sharp as we would have been (with adequate rest). But there is no issue. I'm glad that we are creating chances…I know there's a lot of emotional, mental and physical fatigue."
After the team's 15 unsuccessful shots in the first half, Langone scored her third goal of the year on a redirect.
Mallory Wolf launched the ball in with speed from outside the circle, and Langone was able to knock it in the right direction to get Millersville on the board.
"Maci's been chomping at the bit, I was glad to see her get one," said Behrens.
It was the eighth shot the Marauders had put on goal at the time. That was only 27 minutes into the game, and it helped the Marauders to be able to amass 18 shots and 10 corners in the first half alone.
Although the second half featured a strong Millersville attack, the Marauders finished the game with with 31 shots, 15 shots on goal and 18 corners. One of those shots was an impressive Robison goal.
The play seemed to develop slowly. Out of nowhere, Robison blasted a back-handed shot into the back of cage to give the Marauders their second and final goal of the afternoon.
"We really had a good set up with our forwards," said Robison, "I just took it and took a reverse shot."
Robison makes it sound simple, but it was truly an incredible shot due in large part to the element of surprise working in Robison's favor as she fired the shot off while running at a full sprint. Â
"I didn't think it went in," said Robison while laughing. "I was like, 'it actually worked.'"
Although Millersville would not score again, there were opportunities on opportunities on opportunities.
One of those came at the beginning of the second half as Millersville nearly tacked on a second goal at the time.
Kyra Brakefield, who was leading a fast break down the field, took a shot that was deflected by the Seton Hill goalie. Even after contacting the ball, it continued to roll and bounced off the post, missing by literally inches.
Another chance came in the middle of the first half when Millersville put up four shots within a 2:28 time period. With 19:37 left
Courtney Weaver's shot was saved and
Kathleen Bishop followed up with a shot that was blocked. Minutes later,
Aliza Mizak had her shot saved and Bishop once again had a shot blocked.
"We're finding our way together," said Behrens. "Every day we play together we get better."
That has showed recently for sure. The dominance today was so extreme that Seton Hill did not attempt a single shot or a corner. The Griffins never even once got the ball within the circle.
All things considered, Eberhardt played well in goal for the Griffins. She was faced with 31 shots, made 13 saves, and broke up several possible goals by clearing the ball, all while allowing just two goals against the eager Marauder offensive.
Millersville goalie
Kylee Bair improved to 7-1, although she had a comfortable afternoon in today's game. She has posted five straight shutouts.
It was the third win in five days for Millersville, who are in a stretch of four games over the course of seven days.
The Marauders final game in this run comes at home on Monday for an 11 a.m. start time against Queens.
