Bishop, Millersville put on a display with 9-0 victory

Millersville, Pa. – The conditions were murky on Monday in Millersville, but the Marauders' play was not.

When Kathleen Bishop came to the field today, she was unsure if the rain would allow the game between Millersville (9-3) and Queens (4-8) to go on. It did, and she and the Marauders poured on a storm of their own, extinguishing any bit of hope from Queens immediately by scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and going on to rout the Royals 9-0 behind four goals from Bishop.

As rain doused the players at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, Millersville didn't just rain goals: they poured them on, even when the rain later subsided. It was the largest margin of victory since a 2014's 9-0 win over Newberry. Of the nine goals today, Bishop was responsible for nearly half of them.

Bishop scored the most goals by a Marauder since Katelyn Zapp scored four in 2014. Bishop became the fourth Marauder to score four goals in one game. She joins Zapp (2014), Jaclyn Kulesza (2005) and Dena Gockley (1995) in a four-way tie for second place in most Millersville goals in one game. Gockley holds of all-time record for goals in a single game with five in 1994.

"I honestly didn't know that," said Bishop after the game, when she found out she had solidified herself in Millersville field hockey history.

Bishop now has eight goals on the season. Thus, she scored as many goals in this single game as she had in the previous 11 games combined.

"I credit that to my teammates," said Bishop. "They gave me such great opportunities."

Bishop was being humble, but her teammates help was undeniably significant. Of her four goals, three of them were assisted. Erica Tarsi aided two of them, helping Tarsi to a "hat trick" of her own as she tallied three assists and also added a goal.

The first goal of the game (which came less than five minutes into the contest) was a Tarsi assist to Bishop.

"It was a beautiful ball," said Bishop. "I was like 'I have to make this.'"

Although it was surprising that Millersville scored so fast, it was foreshadowing of what was to come. Not only did Millersville score three goals in the first 9:12 of the game, but the Marauders had also taken 16 shots (with 10 shots on goal) within the same amount of time.

"I thought today you saw that they were more engaged and more involved," said Millersville head coach Shelly Behrens of her team.

That would certainly seem to be a fair statement. Millersville put up 35 shots, which is the most they have attempted all season. The Marauders were able to put 21 of those shots on goal.

Queens took four shots with two of them challenging Marauder goalkeeper Kylee Bair to save them. Bair did, and she recorded her sixth straight shutout and sixth consecutive victory. Bair and Millersville have not allowed a goal for 466 straight minutes.

"Every opponent on every given day has something to offer," said Behrens. "Today, I think we had things click better than usual."

Redshirt freshman Sol Ortiz-Kreiner scored the first goal of her career. Courtney Weaver scored her first goal of the season and added an assist. Annabelle Tierney added the final goal of the game for her second goal of the year.  Emma Boutcher tacked one on for her second of the year as well.

The goals were disproportionate to the amount of shots on goal Millersville had, with many more resulting in goals than in a typical game. Eventually, Queens pulled Miranda Childers (their goalie) but it was too late. Childers was able to make 10 saves in the game.

She faced six shots from Bishop and seven from Tarsi.

Tarsi's goal was her seventh of the season, as she just recorded Millersville's first hat trick of the year last Thursday. But even after scoring a goal today and three last week, she has been jumped by Bishop for the lead in most Marauder goals this season. Bishop didn't care how many she had, she was just glad they played so well.

"It was really, really awesome," said Bishop on the win. "We didn't even know if we were going to play on time with the field being that wet…it was an awesome feeling to actually be able to play and to be able to play that well. And it was great to see everybody get in the game and get to play."

The Marauders seemed to be unaware of the conditions, focusing only on winning. In the previous five wins, Millersville had combined to outscore opponents 8-0. With the nine goals in this game factored in, Millersville are now outscoring their opposition 17-0 in the last six games.

Fifteen different Marauders attempted a shot in the game. In the first half, the Marauders amassed 22 shots, 13 shots on goal and six goals.

"Basically what everyone saw today is what I get to see every day in practice," said Behrens.

Millersville is now 9-3 on the year. Its next test comes with only one day of rest in between a game day and a non-game day as the Marauders take on East Stroudsburg Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
