Marauders pull out another close one for third straight victory

Kutztown, Pa. – Millersville field hockey appears to be hitting its stride. For the second game in a row, the No. 10 Millersville field hockey team scored a late goal to pull off a victory. Tuesday at Kutztown, it was Kyra Brakefield who was the hero, scoring in the 66th minute to propel the Marauders into a 1-0 victory against Kutztown.
Brakefield took two shots in the game, but her second was enough for the Marauders. Millersville gained possession of the ball on the left side of the field, starting a breakaway for Brakefield. The sophomore from East Petersburg wasted no time, proceeding to score on the final shot the Marauders would attempt in the game.
The goal was the second of the year for Brakefield. It was the 14th shot for Millersville as the Marauders were able to harass the Kutztown goalkeeper with 11 shots on goal.
Kylee Bair got the start at goalkeeper for Millersville. She faced six shots, making two saves and holding her opponent scoreless for the third straight game. Millersville shut out its opponent for the third consecutive game, playing 226 minutes without allowing a goal.
Chardonnay Hope was in goal for Kutztown, and she held her own for most of the game. Hope made nine saves while allowing only one goal.
The result was eerily similar to Millersville's win over Mercyhurst last Friday. On Friday, the game remained scoreless for over 70 minutes before Millersville scored in overtime to end it. Tuesday, it was scoreless for 65 minutes before Millersville scored the game-winner.
The Marauders controlled possession in the game, only allowing the Golden Bears to put two shots on goal and held an 11-0 lead in shots in the first half.
Aliza Mizak and Erica Tarsi were two Marauders that wouldn't leave Kutztown alone. Both Mizak and Tarsi took three shots on goal with Tarsi also putting up one shot that was off-the-mark.
The win is the third in a row for the Marauders, who are now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC. All three wins have been against PSAC opponents and all three have been 1-0 victories.
The win at Kutztown ends a run of two road games. On Thursday, Millersille returns to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium to take on Lindenwood at 4 p.m. Millersville then plays three games in five days.
