Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team's winning streak finally came to an end at the hands of Shippensburg, which clinched home field advantage throughout the PSAC Tournament. After 10 consecutive wins, No. 1 Shippensburg defeated the No. 3 Marauders 2-1 on Wednesday behind goals from Emily Barnard and Mary Spisak.
It was Barnard that scored the winning goal for the Raiders, breaking a 1-1 tie with 12:33 left to play. On a fast break, Barnard received a pass from Brooke Sheibley and put it away for her 18
th goal of the season. Barnard is now tied for fourth in the NCAA with her 18 goals.
Her goal was preceded by an incredibly close chance for Millersville as
Sol Ortiz-Kreiner's shot ricocheted off the post to keep the game tied. It was only minutes later that Ship would score the game-winning goal.
Millersville did get a goal out of
Aliza Mizak. Mizak was aided by
Kyra Brakefield who gave Mizak the pass. The ball slipped under Ship goalkeeper Ally Mooney and Mizak sent it home, tying the game at the time, and giving the junior her seventh goal of the year.
Mooney faced two shots on goal from Mizak and two from
Emma Boutcher, making three saves and picking up the win to improve to 13-2 in goal this season.
Millersville's keeper,
Kylee Bair, was tested more than usual today. For only the second time in the last 11 games she allowed a goal (two actually). Bair faced 20 shots in the game while making four saves.
One shot Bair wasn't able to save came from Spisak. She drove down the field with ease, moving through the Marauder defense and scoring the first goal of the contest 18 minutes into the first half.
Shippensburg out-shot the Marauders 20-7 in the game. It was only the third time this season that Millersville allowed more shots than they took, with two of the three coming in losses to Ship (the other was against East Stroudsburg).
Additionally, Ship took 11 corners whereas Millersville only had two.
Although Ship clinched home field in the PSAC Tournament, Millersville is still ranked second in the conference, holding the tiebreaker with East Stroudsburg, which is also 7-2. With six teams making the tournament the top two earn a bye, and the Marauders could very well still achieve that.
With a win on Saturday Millersville would lock up the bye. The Marauders take on Slippery Rock in a 12 p.m. game Saturday--the final regular season game.
Kathleen Bishop,
Maci Langone,
Courtney Weaver,
Kylee Bair and
Moriah Woods are the seniors being celebrated in Saturday's finale.
