Millersville, Pa. - Pitt-Johnstown rolled into Pucillo Gymnasium Saturday with four consecutive wins and had just handed Shippensburg its first PSAC loss of the season less than 24 hours earlier. But the homestanding Millersville Marauders cut down the Mountain Cats with an impressive 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 sweep behind 15 kills and 11 digs from freshman
Lindsey Blevins.
Millersville (14-6, 6-5 PSAC) had dropped a heartbreaking five-setter to Lock Haven the night before, but there was no hangover from the loss. Millersville totaled 45 kills to just 12 errors for a .244 hitting percentage while holding UPJ to 35 kills--its fewest since Sept. 9. It was Millersville's first win over UPJ since 2013.
Blevins recorded her third double-double in a row, and recorded at least 14 kills for the fourth time in the last five matches. The freshman led all players in kills.
Erin Harman delivered 12 kills to two errors and added 12 digs. Harman's career kills total moved to 1,224, placing her second all-time at Millersville.
Haley Butler added efficient offense, totaling 10 kills to one error.
Millersville blitzed the visitors in the opening set, building as much as a 10-point lead at 22-12. A 3-3 set quickly turned int a 9-3 Millersville advantage with
Sophia Marziello serving. Four UPJ miscues combined with a pair of
Kelsi Ceriani kills put the Marauders well on their way to a 1-0 lead.Â
The Marauders rallied in set two, falling behind 22-20 following a 6-1 run by UPJ. But Blevins halted the visitors' run with a kill. Harman added a kill, and Blevins scored another to give the Marauders set point. With the score 24-23,
Kristin Sellers smashed a free ball above net to the UPJ side for a 2-0 Ville advantage.
Set three featured 10 tied scores and five lead changes, but Millersville turned a slight 16-15 lead into a 20-15 lead with a Blevins kill, Harman ace and two UPJ miscues. That was all the breathing room Millersville needed and went on to score 11 of the match's final 14 points. Millersville totaled 14 kills to three errors in the third frame.
The Marauders step outside PSAC play on Oct. 25 for a match against Lancaster County foe Elizabethtown. PSAC play resumes on Friday and Saturday with Millersville's final two home matches of the season.
