Millersville, Pa. - A stirring rally from a 2-0 deficit forced a deciding fifth set, but Millersville's comeback ran out of steam and Lock Haven pulled off a 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11 road win Friday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Any momentum Millersville (13-6, 5-5 PSAC) had gained from wins in the third and fourth sets, Lock Haven squelched it early in the fifth. The Bald Eagles raced to a 10-5 advantage with Millersville committing a pair of service aces and three attack errors early. Lock Haven reached set point at 14-7, but Millersville scored four unanswered, using a pair of kills from
Kelsi Ceriani and
Haley Butler to make the score 14-11. However, the set ended on Millersville's fifth attack error of the shortened set.
Millersville out-hit Lock Haven .140 to .138, totaled two more kills, had the same number of attack errors and the same amount of aces. The difference came at the net where Lock Haven totaled 12 blocks to Millersville's seven and also committed three fewer service errors.
The Marauders received a career performance from rookie
Lindsey Blevins. Blevins led all players with a career-high 22 kills and added a career-high 26 digs.
Kat Forry's 36 digs were the most by any Marauder all season.
Katie Laughman totaled her eighth double-double with 49 assists and 18 digs.
The turning point for Millersville in extending the match came late in the third set. Trailing two sets to none with a 19-17 third set deficit,
Erin Harman delivered a kill, and then took over service. Millersville scored six consecutive points and later scored the final three points of the set on kills from Ceriani and Blevins and a Lock Haven error. Millersville hit a match-high .260 in the third set, totaling 16 kills to three errors.
Blevins (6), Harman (4) and Ceriani (4) combined for 14 of Millersville's 16 kills in the fourth set win. Millersville raced to 7-2 lead thanks in part to four Lock Haven errors. Lock Haven closed the gap to as close as two at 22-20, but Laughman turned a set chance into an attack for a point, and Harman and Blevins closed out the set to force the fifth.
Friday's loss was the third in four PSAC matches for the Marauders. Fighting to stay in PSAC Tournament contention, it was a tough loss to take, especially with 18-5 Pitt-Johnstown (which took down division-leading Shippensburg Friday night) coming to Millersville Saturday.
