Wilmington, Delaware - Millersville and Wilmington volleyball teams traded blows in a five-set thriller Wednesday evening. Millersville rallied from a two sets to one deficit to force a deciding fifth set and was within three points of closing out a road victory. But the Wildcats scored the final five points of the match for a 3-2 win over the Marauders by scores of 25-18, 18-25, 25-10, 25-27, 15-12.
All three of Millersville's (2-3) losses this season have now come in at least four sets and the last two have come in five. The Marauders received 41 assists and 14 digs from sophomore setter
Grace Dawson and a career-high 14 kills from freshman
Haley Butler. The Marauders nearly pulled off the win despite committing 30 attack errors and nine service errors.
Wilmington won the first and third sets in convincing fashion, but twice Millersville responded. The Marauders tallied 14 kills in both the second and fourth sets, extending the match. Millersville built a six-point lead (19-13) in the fourth set before the Wildcats closed the gap, tying the score at 24-24 and then taking a 25-24 lead on a Jill Braunsberg ace. Braunsberg gave that point right back on the next serve with an error, and Millersville picked up a point on a Wilmington attack error and closed the 27-25 set win with a kill from
Kelsi Ceriani.
In the fifth set, Wilmington raced to a 6-1 lead with the help of three Marauder miscues. A timeout from Coach
Brian Smith changed the course of the set, though, as the Marauders responded with four consecutive points. Millersville grabbed its first lead of the set at 8-7 on a kill from Butler and extended its advantage to 12-10 on another Butler kill. Wilmington, however, picked up a point on a Marauder service error, and Jenna Brown served the Wildcats through four consecutive points; the last of which was a service ace.
Ceriani, named the PSAC Central Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, totaled 11 kills on 28 attempts and added a block solo and five block assists.
Erin Harman produced a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Dawson added eight kills.
Millersville travels to Philadelphia on Sept. 13 for a non-conference contest.
