West Chester, Pennsylvania - The Millersville women's volleyball team completed its opening weekend of competition Saturday with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-22) win over W.Va. Wesleyan and a five-set loss (25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) to Daemen.
Both matches were closely contested for the 2-2 Marauders. The early match of the day against W.Va. Wesleyan featured 21 tied scores and eight lead changes throughout while the five-set thriller with Daemen saw 17 lead changes. Middle hitter
Kelsi Ceriani was outstanding in the two matches, totaling 29 kills and just five total errors. Her 17 kills against Daemen were a career high.
Erin Harman totaled 28 kills on the day. Freshman
Katie Laughman was the team leader in kills in both matches, picking up 17 against Wesleyan and 22 against Daemen.
While the Marauders swept Wesleyan, all three sets were decided by no more than three points. The teams went to extra points in the opening set, and
Haley Butler closed the 26-24 win with a kill. The second set was tied as late as 20-20, and Millersville held a one point lead at 22-21. A Harman kill gave the Marauders service, and
Alexis Hamm served the Marauders to three consecutive points and a win. Set three was the same story as set two. The Marauders led 22-21 when Hamm took over with the serve, scored two consecutive points, and Harman ended the match with a kill.
Millersville hit .273 as a team with Harman totaling 15 kills and four errors on 35 swings.
Grace Dawson totaled 32 assists.
Against Daemen, the Marauders recorded a season-high 10 blocks but Daemen was more efficient with a .254 attack percentage and at least 16 kills in three of the five sets. Daemen rolled to a 25-17 win in the first set while the Marauders mustered just eight kills. Millersville won the second set by three after breaking a 22-22 tie with three consecutive points, two of which were Daemen miscues. The Marauders closed again in the third, getting a service ace from
Brittany Ford and back-to-back kills from Harman to erase a 23-22 deficit and win 25-23. Millersville was limited to just nine kills and a .135 hitting percentage in the fourth set, and Daemen carried that momentum into the fifth and pulled away late to close out the win.
Ceriani hit .455 on 33 attempts. Dawson totaled 39 assists.
Millersville travels to Wilmington on Sept. 7 for a non-conference match-up.
