Millersville, Pennsylvania - A
Christian Kemp touchdown catch and
P.J. Santos pick six gave Millersville football a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter. But visiting Kutztown scored 35 unanswered points, including 21 in the second quarter to pull away for a 41-13 PSAC East win.
Kutztown's (1-3, 1-0 PSAC East) Craig Reynolds entered the game as the PSAC's No. 2 rusher and totaled 157 yards and four touchdowns, leading a rushing attack that totaled 309 yards. Kutztown outgained Millersville (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) 559-271, and with nine sacks allowed, Millersville totaled 18 net rushing yards.
Kutztown needed just 2:34 to get on the board. Reynolds scored his first touchdown of the day on a 39-yard scamper. Millersville drove to the Kutztown 22 on its first possession but stalled when
Nii Kotei Nikoi came one yard shy of the first down on a fourth-and-six play. Millersville's defense forced a punt, and on the second snap of the possession,
J.J. Paige found
Christian Kemp for 51 yards for the team's longest pass play of the season. Paige and Kemp connected again on the 10th play of the drive, this time from seven yards out.
Evan Stahl's PAT put the Marauders in front 7-6.
The Golden Bears were eight plays and 62 yards into the following drive when Collin DiGalbo fired a quick pass toward the sideline. Millerville's
P.J. Santos snatched the bobbled catch out of the air and raced 89 yards up the sideline for six points--the third defensive touchdown for Millersville in four games.
The 13-6 lead didn't last, though. Kutztown drove 61 yards in nine plays and tied the game on a Reynolds six-yard TD run, and took the lead 19-13 one drive later when Reynolds scored from four yards out.Â
Paige finished 24-of-36 for 253 yards and a touchdown, but the one interception thrown was a backbreaker for the Marauders. Trailing just 19-13 with 46 seconds left in the first half, Millersville started a drive on its own 39. On the first play, Paige was intercepted by Luke Snyder, setting up the Golden Bears at the 39. Following a Kutztown timeout with 10 seconds left, DiGalbo scrambled, and diving toward the left pylon, snuck the ball inside with his right hand as time expired, giving his team a 27-13 advantage heading into the break.
Millersville failed to penetrate Kutztown territory in the third quarter, and Paige was sacked four times in the 15-minute session. Millersville drove as inside Kuztown 20 twice in the fourth but came up empty in both possessions, turning the ball over on downs twice.
Kemp led all Marauder receivers with 92 yards on five catches. Wiggins and Overton also caught five passes. Overton totaled 50 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 30-yard rush that was his longest of the season.
Kendall Marks led the defense with 10 tackles.
Millersville travels to Bloomsburg next week for a 2 p.m. start.
