Bloomsburg holds off Millersville, 29-15

Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania - Millersville scored first and scored last, but the final eight minutes of the second quarter and the first eight minutes of the third were the difference for Bloomsburg in Saturday's 29-15 PSAC East win.

J.J. Paige threw for 298 yards--the most allowed by Bloomsburg this season. Tight end Tyler Zilen caught a career-high seven passes--the most by a Marauder tight end in more than 15 years. Millersville scored first, taking a 7-0 lead with 1:57 left in the first quarter, when Paige captained a 60-yard drive, hitting 4-of-4 passes and getting a 19-yard run from Phil Overton. Paige capped the drive with a 6-yard connection to Zilen, who hauled in his second touchdown of the season.

The second and third quarters belonged to Bloomsburg, however. The Huskies scored all 29 points in that stretch, including 19 in the second. After the initial scoring drive, Millersville was forced to punt on its next two possessions, and with 1:03 left in the half, Paige threw the first of two interceptions. Dexter Jordan's 50-yard return set the Huskies up on the Millersville 6, and the Huskies needed just two plays to score a touchdown and take a 19-7 lead.

The Huskies carried the momentum into the third quarter. Running back Lawrence Elliott Jr. ripped off a 43-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the second half. The Marauders again drove into Bloomsburg territory on the ensuing drive, but the drive was ended Marquis Seamon picked off page at the 25. Bloomsburg's Ryan Abbott booted his second field goal of the day for a 29-7 lead.

The Marauders pulled with 14 the following possession. Paige went 5-for-6 in a 10-play, 66-yard drive that ended with Kevin Wiggins hauling in a 7-yard touchdown catch. Of Millersville's final five drives, though, three ended in punts and two ended with turnovers on downs. With just over eight minutes remaining, the Marauders drove to the Huskies' 11 after three consecutive 20-plus yard catches by Wiggins. But Paige was sacked on third down and could not connect with Wiggins on a fourth-and-14 conversion attempt.

Millersville also missed a golden opportunity early in the first quarter when safety Kendall Marks ended Bloomsburg's by intercepting a pass and returning it 24 yards to the Bloomsburg 20. After a completion to Wiggins put the ball on the 6, the Marauders committed three penalties and ended the drive with a punt from the Bloomsburg 33.

Wiggins finished with 99 yards on six catches. His 14th career touchdown catch moved him into a tie with Roger Smith and Bill Burke for ninth on Millersville's all-time list.

Overton rushed for a season-high 75 yards on 15 carries. Sean Dugan totaled 12 tackles for this third double-digit tackle effort of the season.

Millersville returns home on Oct. 8 to host East Stroudsburg.
