Defense shines, offense steady as Marauders win season opener

Story Links

Millersville, Pennsylvania - Freshman linebacker Jaleel Robinson returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and quarterback J.J. Paige piloted the Millersville offense with 247 yards passing and two touchdowns of his own, leading the Marauders to a 28-7 season opening victory over Pace Thursday night at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Marauders (1-0) scored their third consecutive win for the first time since 2006 and its first season-opening win since 2012. The formula Millersville used to down Pace Thursday was the same it utilized in the final two wins of the 2015 season: efficient offense and stifling defense. For the third game in a row, Paige threw at least two touchdown passes without an interception, giving him eight touchdown tosses in that stretch. He matched a career high with 24 completions and totaled 247 yards, helping the Marauders to 367 yards of total offense. Kevin Wiggins was on the receiving end of eight completions, totaling 101 yards for his second career 100-yard game. Wiggins has nine TD grabs in his last four games dating back to 2015. Tyler Zilen, who finished with five catches, snared the other TD.

But it was the rookie Robinson that stole the show. He intercepted Jason Habash at the 13-yard line with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter and ran untouched to the end zone. In the fourth quarter, with the Marauders holding a 21-0 lead, Robinson picked off Habash again and this time he weaved through traffic and crossed the goal line after a 38-yard return. It was the first two-interception performance by a Marauder since Jordan Rigby in the 2012 season opener and also the first pick-six since the Rigby in the same game.

The Marauder defense held Pace without a score until 2:58 remaining and limited the visitors to just 263 yards of total offense. The Marauder unit generated three turnovers with Alpha Khan also recovering a second quarter fumble. Kendall Marks led the Marauders with seven stops, a pass breakup and 1 1/2 tackles for loss. Kahn broke up three passes. Millersville has held its last three opponents to an average of 234 yards of offense per game.

Millersville, which possessed the ball 39:15 of the 60 minute contest, opened the game with an eight-play, 77-yard drive that ended with Paige and Wiggins hooked up from 23 yards out. Robinson's first score put the Marauders up 13-0. Early in the fourth, the Marauders added to the lead by piecing together a 14-play, 78-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes of clock. Paige and Zilen capped the drive with a 5-yard TD strike, and the two hooked up on the next play for a two-point conversion. Robinson capped the scoring six minutes later.

Phil Overton led the Marauders' ground game, totaling 57 yards on 16 carries. Paige rushed for 40 on eight totes. He was sacked only once.

Millersville hosts Seton Hill on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
