Millersville, Pennsylvania - On back-to-back possessions late in the fourth quarter, Millersville was driving with a chance to cut into Seton Hill's narrow lead. Both times, however, the Marauders' drives came to a halt with fumbles deep in Seton Hill territory. The Griffins and the PSAC's top-ranked offense held on for a 38-24 win to start 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
One play into the fourth quarter,
Evan Stahl connected on a 32-yard field goal to bring Millersville to within within a touchdown at 31-24. The Marauder defense forced a punt, giving the offense possession at its own 18-yard line with a chance for the tying score. The drive lasted only three plays and a 30-yard punt return from Ardell Brown put the Griffins on the doorstep. The Griffins needed just three plays for Khalil Howard to score from the 2 and increase their lead to 14.
J.J. Paige, who finished with 280 yards passing, two touchdowns and no interceptions, connected with
Christian Kemp for 29 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive. On first-and-10 from the Seton Hill 36, Paige lofted a pass into the right side of the end zone to a streaking
Kevin Wiggins, but Wiggins was unable to complete the reception. Two plays later, Kemp snared a pass at the Seton Hill 5 but a collision with a teammate caused the ball to pop free. Tim Johnson pounced on the loose ball for Seton Hill, ending the Marauders' threat.
Millersville's defense forced a punt, and the offense took over at midfield with nearly five minutes to play. Paige and
Phil Overton hooked up for 22 yards on first down, but the Marauders committed a second consecutive drive-ending fumble on the next snap.
Earlier, with six minutes remaining in the third period, Overton had scored on a 16-yard TD run to cut Seton Hill's advantage to 24-21. But 20 seconds later, Christian Strong connected with Jarvis McClam, who wheeled out of the back field and streaked down the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown. That score gave the Griffins a 10-point lead.
Seton Hill followed up its week one 50-point performance with 38 points and 536 yards of offense. Despite trailing just 17-14 at the half, Millersville had mustered just 133 yards of offense in the first half. The two scoring plays--a Kemp 39-yard catch and run, and a 45-yard
Nii Kotei Nikoi reception, accounted for more than half of the team's production. Paige went 12-for-21 with 161 yards in the second half, and Overton, who was held to 17 yards rushing in the first half, totaled 43 yards and a touchdown on six carries in the third. Overton also caught four passes for 40 yards, giving him 100 yards of offense. Kemp finished with 111 yards receiving, marking his first career 100-yard game. He also returned the opening kickoff 61 yards then finished the drive with his 39-yard catch, accounting for every yard gained in the drive.
Paige extended his streak of games without an interception thrown to five, and has thrown 10 TD passes in that stretch.
Sean Dugan was busy at his linebacker position, tallying 19 tackles, a sack and 2 1/2 tackles for loss.
Jaleel Robinson, who was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week in week one for his two interceptions, recovered a first quarter fumble and added 20 return yards.
Jarrid Satterfield broke up three passes.
Millersville travels to California (Pa.) next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
