Millersville, Pennsylvania - Millersville University men's soccer coach Steve Widdowson has announced the hiring Garret Pettis as the program's new assistant coach. Pettis replaces Steve Small, who was hired as the head coach at Slippery Rock in the offseason. After a historic collegiate career at Lipscomb, Pettis has played for Widdowson as a five-year member of the Harrisburg City Islanders.
Pettis, a native of Elizabethtown, Pa., and graduate of Lower Dauphin High School, joined the City Islanders' organization in 2012 and played under Widdowson, who along with leading the Marauders, has served on the City Islanders' staff for more than a decade. Even while playing soccer at the professional level, Pettis gained significant coaching experience. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at Dickinson College where he helped the team to a 13-5-3 record and NCAA Tournament berth.
The top goal-scorer in Lipscomb history, Pettis was a senior captain, four-year starter and two-time All-Atlantic Sun First Team selection. He was voted the 2008 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. He set program records for goals in a season, goals in a game and career goals.
Pettis earned a degree in health and physical education.

"I am very excited to add Garret to our coaching staff," said Widdowson. "He brings with him a wealth of playing experience at the highest level of NCAA play as well as at the professional level. He is a young enthusiastic coach that will bring renewed energy to our program and an infectious spirit that our players will feed off of. I know the players are excited about this addition and I am eager to start working with Garret as we look to continue and build upon previous successful seasons. This is a time of change for the program, but we will work to ensure that it is a very positive change in both the long and short term."
Prior to coaching at Dickinson, Pettis was a volunteer assistant at his alma mater and also coached at Central Dauphin High School in 2014. His experience also includes working with the Harrisburg City Islanders Academy and the City Islanders' 23-U League. The top goal-scorer in Lipscomb history, Pettis was a senior captain, four-year starter and two-time All-Atlantic Sun First Team selection.
