Softball Rallies in Game One to Split with Kutztown

Kutztown, Pa. – Down 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Millersville softball team exploded for four runs and held on for the 4-3 win before getting edged out 5-4 in the nightcap against Kutztown on Friday afternoon.

Kelsey Campbell jump started the Marauder offense in the sixth lacing a one-out double to left center. The very next batter, Megan McCurdy reached on an error by the second basemen and advanced to second on a passed ball. Raeann Buskey singled to left field to drive in both Cambell and McCurdy. Heather Lutz gave Millersville the 4-3 lead on a bases loaded single that plated home teammates Jamie Trewhella and Maria Spinosa.

Brianna Andraos (9-7) retired the Golden Bears in order during the bottom half of the inning and pitched her way out of trouble in the seventh after giving up a leadoff double to Danielle Sienko. Andraos scattered five hits across seven innings of work and stuck out one in the win.

Kutztown opened up the scoring in the second game when Sienko slapped a 2 RBI single to left field off of Cassidy Pinchorksi in the bottom of the first. The Marauders took a 4-2 lead in the third inning as the team combined for six hits within the frame. Jaynie Black and Trewhella began the inning with a pair of singles before scoring on a Lutz double down the right field line that chased Golden Bear starter Savannah Nierintz from the circle. Bridget Newman would limit the damage, but not before Brittany Smith and McCurdy drove in a pair of runs of the on hard-hit singles.

The Golden Bears added a run in the bottom half of the inning and tied it up at four apiece in the fifth on a Danielle Sienko sacrifice fly. Kutztown walked off in the seventh inning on a Danielle Amato double that scored Blayse Cholish from third base.

Heather Lutz had a big afternoon for the Marauders finishing 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Her single in the top of the first inning of the second game represented her 100th colligate hit.

Millersville improves to 18-12 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC and the Golden Bears fell to 22-10 overall and 5-3 within conference action. The Marauders remain tied for second in the PSAC East with Kutztown and have a home doubleheader slated for April 22 against the Golden Bears.

The Marauders return to action on Sunday, April 10 when they meet East Stroudsburg at home for a doubleheader. The series was originally scheduled for Saturday, but with inclement weather expected during the afternoon the teams pushed the doubleheader back and first pitch from the Millersville Softball Field is slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
