Millersville Pa. – The Millersville softball team exploded for eight runs in the second inning of enroute to a 12-1 (5) win over visiting Chestnut Hill in game one. In the nightcap,
Brittany Smith smacked an inside the park home run to power the Marauders to a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Griffins.
Â
Chestnut Hill (11-39) plated the first run of game one in the top of the first when Laura Eidman reached on a Marauder error that scored teammate Lily Winn who opened the game with a single.
Brianna Andraos (15-8) silenced the Griffin bats from that point forward, only allowing two more hits after the unearned run scored.
Â
The Marauders quickly erased the 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the first as both
Heather Lutz and
Megan Hallock reached base safely before
Brittany Smith sent a rocket over the center field fence to make it 3-1.
Maria Spinosa reached on an error by the Griffin first basemen and scored a batter later when
Megan McCurdy doubled down the left field line.
Â
The Millersville bats chased Griffin starter Nichole Eberhard from the game in the second stanza as she gave up a pair of runs and left a runner on third before being replaced by Hunter Irvin. Irvin was unable to get out of the inning unscathed as Spinosa singled up the middle that scored
Kelsey Campbell from third. The Marauders ended up batting through the lineup with Campbell, Spinosa, McCurdy,
Jamie Trewhella, Lutz, Hallock and Smith earning RBIs in the second inning to make it 12-1.
Â
Andraos worked five innings to register her 19
th complete game of the season. She also struck out five and lowerd her ERA to 1.82. Impressively enough, Andraos has only given up one homer on the season through 161.1 innings pitched.
Â
In game two,
Cassidy Pinchorski (11-8) arguably turned in her best pitching performance of the season striking out 12 batters without issuing a walk across seven innings of work.
Â
Millersville (26-16) jumped out to the 1-0 lead thanks to the inside the park home run from
Brittany Smith. The Marauders would add to their lead in third inning as
Jaynie Black and
Jamie Trewhella led off the inning with a pair of singles. Black scored on a
Megan Hallock double and Millersville made it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a
Megan McCurdy sacrifice fly.
Â
Chestnut Hill scored its lone run when Julie Heaton scored on a fielders choice off of the bat of Megan Kehr.
Â
Brittany Smith finished the doubleheader 3-for-6, with a pair of homers and five RBIs. Smith now sits one home run shy of matching
Jordan Sheffield's career program record of 14.
Millersville returns to action on Sunday, April 24 in a crucial doubleheader with Kutztown. The Golden Bears and Marauders currently sit second and third in the PSAC East as a Millersville split will go along way to securing the second seed for the PSAC Postseason Tournament. Â
