Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team battled No. 7-ranked Mercyhurst Friday but came up short losing by a score of 16-10.
Bridget Hufnagel and
Callie Kavanaugh each had three goals while
Sabrina Fusco added a pair. For the Lakers, Kristin Anderson led the way with six goals on seven shots and dominated the draw controls earning six.
Bryana Weston-Wyatt had 12 saves, marking her fifth staight contest with double-digit saves.
It did not take long for the Lakers to strike as Grace Lawson put Mercyhurst up just 23 seconds into the game. After jumping out to a 3-1 lead, Hufnagel and Fusco scored back-to-back goals to tie the score at 3. Mercyhurst would extend their lead to two again before
Jamie Damirgian scored from a free position attempt to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Lakers. Shortly after, the game was delayed almost an hour due to storms in the area. When the two sides resumed play, the Lakers struck first but Kavanaugh and Fusco would tie the game at six. Just before halftime, Mercyhurst's Carly Zimmerman scored to give the Lakers a 7-6 lead at the break.
Renee Morrow would start the scoring in the second as she tied the game at 7-7 just a few minutes into the second half. The Lakers would respond however, scoring the next four goals and jumping out to an 11-7 advantage. The Marauders fought back valiently, cutting the deficit to 12-10 before the Lakers scored four more unanswered to give Mercyhurst a commanding 16-10 lead which they would hold onto.
Mercyhurst improves to 9-1 (6-0 PSAC) while Millersville falls to 6-5 (3-4 PSAC). The Marauders remain home for their next match against Kutztown on April 6 at 4 p.m.
