Raleigh, N.C. – The Millersville softball squad (3-3) concluded play at the Shaw University Challenge on Sunday as it fell to Wayne State, 2-1, and Chowan, 4-3.
Millersville jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Wayne State in the top of the second on a leadoff triple by
Kelsey Campbell and two-out infield single by
Raeann Buskey.
WSU tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Hannah McLounie set the table with a leadoff single and was later sacrificed to second by a Warrior teammate. McCounie went on to steal third and scored on fielder's choice off of the bat of Ali Lince.
The Marauders were back in business in the third as they loaded the bases up with only one out, but Wayne State pitch Lyndsay Butler induced an inning ending 5-2-3 double play. Butler then led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run as she preserved the 2-1 lead on the mound.
Brianna Andraos was charged with both earned runs on the bump on five hits in six innings. Andraos also struck out two and did not walk a batter. Campebell, Buskey and
Mandy Hammond each finished the first game with a hit.
In the nightcap
Cassidy Pinchorski threw 5.2 innings for the Black & Gold giving up three earned runs off of four hits while strike out three. Andraos pitched in relief and was credited with the loss after giving up one run.
Chowan struck first in the contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Millersville responded in the third inning with two runs of their own behind a
Mandy Hammond two-run single.
Kelsey Campbell led off the top of the fourth with a solo homerun to push the Marauders ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Rachel Clark belted a solo homerun to knot the score 3-3.
The Hawks kept the Marauders off the scoreboard in the seventh and earned the walkoff win on a single by Halie Cox that gave Chowan the 4-3 win.
Campbell paced the Marauder hitters with three hits in the setback as she improves her batting average to .400.
The Marauders will remain in the Carolina's for its spring break as they are set for a double header with Winston-Salem State on Monday before taking part in the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic on March 9-11 in Myrtle Beach.
