Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Millersville softball team held late leads in both games against Winston-Salem on Monday afternoon, but the Marauders fell 3-1, in game one and 5-3 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Both teams played stellar defense with Millersville (3-5) and WSSU playing through a scoreless tie after the first five innings. The Marauders struck first when
Brittany Smith scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
The Millersville lead was short-lived with the Ram bats coming alive for a three-run sixth inning. Samantha Gibbs opened the scoring with an RBI single that was followed by a Destiny Snipes two-RBI single that scored Gibbs and Idaysha Quinones.
Brianna Andraos was credited with the loss on the mound, but turned in a solid performance as she struck out three and was only credited with one earned run. Andraos (2-3) lowered her season ERA to 1.88 and now has three complete game efforts.
In the nightcap it took another Winston-Salem rally that resulted in the Marauders falling 5-3 extra inning win.
Maggie Murphy opened the scoring in the fourth with an RBI double to right field that scored
Kelsey Campbell. The Rams had an immediate response in the bottom of the inning with Mercedes Hargett slapping an RBI triple before scoring a run on a Gibbs single that gave Winston-Salem a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Millersville tied it up in the sixth inning when Campbell scored on a
Tori Kinsella single down the third base line. The Marauders would retake the lead when
Megan McCurdy drew a bases loaded walk.
With the Rams trailing 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh pitch runner Melissa Carillo scored on a
Cassidy Pinchorski wild pitch to tie that game and send it to extra innings. WSSU held the Marauders scoreless in the top of the eighth before Taonya Stanley hit a walk-off double.
Millersville returns to action Wednesday when they take on Alderson Broaddus and Ohio Valley as part of the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic. The Marauders play Alderson Broaddus at 9:30 a.m. and Ohio Valley at 11:30 a.m.
