Shippensburg, Pa. - The Millersville lacrosse team edged Shippensburg on Tuesday, defeating the Raiders by a score of 9-8.
Bridget Hufnagel led the attack for Millersville, scoring five goals and scooping up two ground balls.
Kristen Butzner had her best offensive game of the season, chipping in two goals on three shots.
Renee Landis and
Jamie Damirgian each had a goal in the Marauders win while
Bryana Weston-Wyatt stood tall recording 14 saves.
Goals were scarce to start the game as the Raiders' Tanisha Joseph broke the scoreless tie around the 20-minute mark. Butzner would even the score when she caught a pass from
Abby Mack and recorded her third goal of the season. The two sides traded goals for the rest of the half with Sarah McLeod giving Shippensburg a 4-3 lead that they would take into half.
Hufnagel came out firing in the second half, recording three-straight goals to give Millersville their first lead of the game. Butzner and
Renee Landis each scored a pair to extend the Marauders' advantage to 8-4 putting them what looked to be well on their way to victory. After Shippensburg cut the lead to 8-6 with five minutes left on the clock, Hufnagel scored her fifth of the game as Millersville looked to close out Shippensburg. The Raiders would put a scare into Millersville, however, cutting the lead to just one goal with just over a minute to play in the game.
Sabrina Fusco would win the crucial draw control for the Marauders and prevent Shippensburg from getting another shot.
Weston-Wyatt has now recorded double-digit saves in her last four games and her 14 on Tuesday was just one shy of her career high which she recorded earlier this year against IUP.
The Marauders now stand at 6-4 on the season with a 3-3 mark in PSAC play. Millersville returns to Chryst Field Friday when they host the Lakers of Mercyhurst at 4 p.m.
