Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team raced out of the gates with a season-high 28 points in the first quarter and then withstood a furious second half rally from West Chester for a key 77-70 win Saturday at Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville won its seventh consecutive game while ending the Golden Rams' 11-game streak.
The Marauders (17-7, 13-7 PSAC) kept their hopes alive for a No. 2 seed in the PSAC Tournament and denied West Chester the opportunity to clinch the division. It was also Millersville's first win over West Chester in six tries. The Marauder offense was powered by the trio of
Yasmin Cooper,
Celeste Robinson and
Shelby Reimer, who combined for 55 of Millersville's 79 points. Cooper poured in a season-high 20 points while Robinson added 19 on 8-of-10 shooting. Reimer hit 7-of-10 shots for 16 points and added five assists.
Millersville entered the game as the PSAC's top defense and West Chester as the PSAC's No. 1 offense. But it was Millersville that shot a season-best 58.8 percent from the field, which marked the highest field goal percentage in a game in the STATCREW era, which dates to 2002. West Chester, meanwhile, was held to 30 percent shooting--its lowest mark since the season opener.
Millersville led by as many as 19 and trailed for only 26 seconds, early in the first quarter.
Aunjel Van Brakle scored two less than two minutes into the game and Millersville never again trailed. Reimer hit a driving layup with four minutes left in the first quarter, sparking a 16-4 Millersville run that carried into the second. Robinson's bucket off of a Reimer assist with six minutes to play in the half gave the Marauders' their largest lead of the game at 38-19.
But West Chester rallied in the third quarter. With Dallas Ely leading the charge, the Golden Rams hit five 3-pointers and scored 26 points in 10 minutes. The quarter closed with West Chester reeling off eight consecutive points. The run carried into the fourth period with Kendall Benovy and Ely scoring back-to-back buckets. Millersville's lead was suddenly just one point at 58-57.
Cooper provided an answer for Millersville but Ely retaliated with one of her six 3-pointers, tying the score at 60. Just 17 seconds later, though, Reimer slashed into the paint and scored two, giving Millersville the lead once again. Millersville held on to the lead this time, hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 5:28 while West Chester went 2-of-10 from the field.
Millersville held a 52-16 edge in the lane and managed to overcome 27 turnovers which turned into 29 West Chester points. Ely led West Chester with 27 and also set the school's career scoring record in the process, finishing the game with 1,561 points.
While the rest of the PSAC has just one regular season game remaining, Millersville has two left on the schedule. The Marauders host Mansfield Monday before closing with East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.
