Marauders Beat Mansfield to Run Streak to Eight

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team ran its winning streak to eight and stayed in the race for a No. 2 seed in the PSAC Tournament by dispatching Mansfield 68-45 Monday evening at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Winners of 10 of the last 11, Millersville (18-7, 14-7 PSAC) improved to 35-0 all-time in home games against Mansfield and has won 28 in a row by double digits. The Marauders held the Mountaineers to 29.3 percent shooting--its sixth consecutive opponent held to under 40 percent shooting. Mansfield was the 15th Millersville opponent to not break 60 points.

Millersville trailed 18-15 after one period but overcame the slow start by outscoring Mansfield 23-8 in the second period. Yasmin Cooper scored the first bucket of the second period, starting a 19-3 run for the Marauders in which they hit 7-of-11 shots and held Mansfield to 1-of-14 shooting. The Marauders scored nine unanswered in one stretch, building the lead to 34-21 with two minutes to play in the half.

The Marauders continued to pull away in the second half. Millersville followed up its 50 percent shooting in the first half with 42 percent shooting in the second. Alayah Hall scored nine of her season-high 14 points in the second half. She sank 6-of-8 shots, made her only three and lone free throw. Millersville's biggest lead of 25 points game came with two minutes left with Krista Mellinger turned a steal into a coast-to-coast layup.

Celeste Robinson matched Hall for game-high honors, connecting on 5-of-10 shots anf 4-of-4 from the line. Robinson also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Millersville's regular season finale is Wednesday against East Stroudsburg at Pucillo Gymnasium. A Marauder win and a Shippensburg loss to Bloomsburg would give Millersville the No. 2 seed from the PSAC East and a first round bye in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Any other scenario puts the Marauders as the No. 3 seed and hosting a first round home game on Saturday.
