Lock Haven, Pennsylvania - David Wuestner represented the Millersville wrestling team at Saturday's PSAC Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 285-pound weight class. He is the first Marauder 285-pounder to place at the conference championships in more than a decade.
Wuestner had a significant run, winning three of his first four matchups. The day started off well for Wuestner, opening up with a tiebreaker victory. In the quarterfinal, Wuestner was bested by Mercyhurst's Andy Welton--ranked No. 3 in Division II--by major decision. The loss eliminated his chance of winning in the 285 class, but still gave the heavyweight a shot to place. Wuestner stayed alive with another tiebreaker victory, this time edging Seton Hill's Daniel Davis, 4-3. He advanced to the consolation semifinal with a convincing 16-1 technical fall over East Stroudsburg's Daniel Makagon--his first technical fall since 2014-15. He came within one win of the third-place match, but Gannon's Nick Budd topped Wuestner by a 6-1 decision, putting the Marauder in the fifth-place bout against Kutztown's Ryan Appleby. There, Wuestner fell by decision, 5-1. Wuestner entered select company as a Millersville heavyweight to place at the league championships. The 285-pound Jerry McCoy was the last Marauder to win a PSAC Championship and that came in 1995-96.
The 157-pound
Nathan Stewart was also able to earn some points for the Marauders, scoring three team points after winning a match by medical forfeit.
Millersville's
Keegan Worley represented Millersville at 133 pounds and was defeated twice in two matches to end his day at the PSAC Championships. He lost his first to top seed and eventual champ Korbin Myers of Edinboro. In the 141 weight class,
Kyle Loeb suffered a similar fate, falling in both of his matches. He lost his first bout to Division II's No. 2-ranked and eventual runner-up Joseph Allesandro of Seton Hill. The same happened for
David Charles, who came within one point of taking down Giovanni Ciotti of Gannon, falling 4-3 in the match and later losing once again by merely one point in the consolation round to Clarion's Mike Bartolo.
Evan Morrill went 0-2 on the day for Millersville in the 184 weight class. Morrill nearly pulled off a win in the first round, coming up short in an 8-5 loss against Mercyhurst's Mike Green. In the 165 class,
Shane Ruhnke was defeated by decision in his first match by Edinboro's Fritz Hoehn. Ruhnke was later downed by Jared Siegrist of Lock Haven, ending his hopes of medaling at the tournament. Hoehn finished fourth and Siegrist placed fifth.
At 125 pounds,
Austin Camacci battled hard in the first round but lost 11-10 to Lock Haven's Jake Field, who eventually placed fourth. Camacci was later eliminated by third-place finisher Jake Gromacki of Clarion by a technical fall.
Trenton Cook fared similarly at 174, also going 0-2 on the day.
Colton Dull lost a 5-0 decision to Clarion's Dustin Conti in the opening match and was eliminated by Seton Hill's Jake Temple, who went on to reach the third-place match.
Millersville finished 12th as a team while Edinboro held off Lock Haven for its sixth consecutive championship. Edinboro totaled 156.5 points to Lock Haven's 132. Pitt-Johnstown was the top finisher among Division II programs, taking fifth with 72 points.
The next competition for the Marauders comes in 2017 when they compete in the F&M Open. Â
