Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania - The Millersville men's basketball team opened Saturday's PSAC crossover at Slippery Rock by hitting 6-of-8 3-pointers for a nine-point halftime lead. But as red-hot as the Marauders shot in the first half, they were just as cold in the second. Millersville shot 16 percent over the final 20 minutes and fell, 73-56.
The Marauders connected on 4-of-25 shots in the second half and went 0-for-12 over a 10:45 minute stretch that saw The Rock take a 45-45 tie to a 20-point lead. Slippery Rock outscored Millersville 43-17 in the second half. It was the first time all season Millersville lost a game by more than eight points and the first time it failed to score at least 66 points.
The final 20 minutes were a stark contrast to the first 20. Millersville opened the game with three 3-pointers in a little more than three minutes and led 15-4 after a pair of
Conrad Chambers free throws. Chambers, who scored 11 first-half points, gave the Marauders a 13-point lead with 3:08 left in the period. Millersville also shot 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
But Slippery Rock opened the second half on a 13-4 run and knotted the game at 43-43. Millersville went 1-for-10 in that opening eight minutes. It only got worse for the Marauders, though. After
Jordan Greene momentarily gave the Marauders the lead back one possession later, Millersville did not score another field goal until
Cornell Yarde II hit a jumper with 1:11 to play. Millersville was outscored 30-7 in that span. While Millersville went 0-for-12, Slippery Rock shot 9-of-13, including 4-of-6 from three.
Chambers led Millersville with 17 points, hitting 4-of-6 from three. Yarde was the only other Marauder to crack double figures, scoring 11.
Marcus Adkison's stretch of seven consecutive games in double figures and four of 20 or more came to an end after shooting 1-of-7 from the field for five points. Slippery Rock out-rebounded Millersville 50-24.
Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel was not on the sidelines for the game as he was with his wife, Liz, awaiting the birth of their first child.
Millersville now breaks for the holidays, returning to the court on Dec. 30 against Mansfield.
