Millersville, Pennsylvania - Millersville's
Jordan Greene provided a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and the Marauders held off a late Mansfield charged for a 71-68 PSAC East win Friday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
The Marauders (5-4, 4-2 PSAC), under first-year head coach
Casey Stitzel, needed just nine games to top the 2015-16 season win total and improved to 4-0 at home with the win. With 20 point-per-game scorer
Marcus Adkison unable to find his shooting stroke and starters
Cornell Yarde II and
Jon Lott saddled with foul trouble, Greene gave the lift the Marauders needed. He sank 7-of-12 shots and 6-of-7 free throws, topping his previous career high in points by 11.
Having not played in 20 days, the Marauders were unsurprisingly rusty early, trailing 33-29 at the half but then rallying with 42 second half points. Lott's second 3-pointer of the game just five minutes into the second half gave Millersville it's first lead since the opening minute of the game. Over the next nine minutes, Millersville outscored Mansfield 22-8, receiving nine points from
Conrad Chambers. Mansfield made just one field goal and committed eight turnvoers in that stretch. A Chambers' 3-pointer put the Marauders up by 11 with 7:36 to play.
Millersville held the 11-point advantage with 3:03 to go, but missed its next three shots, and Mansfield ripped off a 10-0 run, hitting 5-of-5 free throws and 2-of-2 shots from the field. Jahyde Gardiner splashed Mansfield's first 3-pointer of the game with 46 seconds left, bringing his club within 69-68. Millersville put the ball in the hands of Chambers who slashed down the right side of the lane and finished with 19 seconds remaining.
Gardiner saw one more chance to the tie the game but his shot struck iron. Two more Mansfield chances also came up empty.
Chambers finished with 18 points, scoring 13 of them in the second half. Adkison managed eight points despite going 0-of-7 from three and not making a three for the first time this season. Despite missing extended second half minutes with four fouls, Lott finished with eight points, four rebounds and two assists.
Millersville faces a quick turnaround, hosting Goldey-Beacom Saturday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.
