Millersville, Pennsylvania -Â Despite
Courtney Hinnant's double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, Millersville women's basketball fell 60-49 to Meryhurst Sunday.
Aunjel Van Brakle had 13 but no other Marauder reached double-digits as the undermanned Millersville could not keep pace with the Lakers.
Millersville looked strong to start the game, jumping out to a 7-2 lead as Hinnant scored back to back layups. With the score 9-8 Millersville, went on a run and extended the to five before Mercyhurst scored four unanswered to close the first quarter.
The Lakers came out shooting in the second quarter, as Jalin Steel drove the lane for a layup and next time down the floor she drilled a three to give Millersville a 19-15 lead. Steel would hit another three minutes later as Mercyhurst extended their lead to six points. Millersville would cut into the lead, outscoring the Lakers eight to four and going into the half trailing by just two (30-28).
The two sides came out of the break trading buckets in the third quarter before Natalie Piaggesi and Angela Heintz scored to make the lead 38-32 Mercyhurst. Van Brakle would score back-to-back buckets to cut the lead to two points but once again Jalin Steel nailed a three-pointer to kill the momentum for Millersville. Mercyhurst would keep their foot on the gas petal, making the score 51-39.
The closest Millersville would come would be eight points after Van Brakle made a layup to make the score 45-53. Once again, Steel would hit a three and Merychurst would end up cruising to victory. The loss marks the first time since 1990-91 that the women's basketball program has started 0-2 at home.Â
With the loss, Millersville falls to 2-2 (0-2 PSAC) and will go to Florida over Thanksgiving to face Tampa and Eckerd Friday and Saturday. The Marauders should get a boost with
Janelle Robinson returning to the lineup while the status of
Celeste Robinson remains unknown.Â
