Washington, Pennsylvania - Shane Ruhnke and the Millersville University wrestling team cleaned up Saturday at the season-opening Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Ruhnke won the individual title at 165 pounds, and a total of nine Marauders placed. Millersville took third as a team.
Ruhnke, seeing his first action since March of 2015, won four of his five matches by fall for his first career tournament win. Ruhnke picked up two first-round pins, including one in 23 seconds, and two second round pins to go with a 15-3 major decision in the semifinals over Washington & Jefferson's Alex Miller. Ruhnke squared off against Wheeling Jesuit's Nick Skonieczny in the finals and won with a fall at the 4:18 mark.Â
Three Marauders placed at 125 pounds, led by
Austin Camacci's runner-up finish.
Connor Sheehan placed fourth, and freshman
Aaron Wildonger took sixth. Camacci opened with a 16-0 tech fall and followed with back-to-back first-round pins to reach the final. Camacci was edged 9-6 by Southern Maine's Peter De Gallo.
Sheehan scored a major decision and a pin to reach the semifinals. There, he lost to De Gallo before falling in the third-place match. Wildonger picked up a major decision and fall before running into Sheehan in the quarters, where he was pinned in 39 seconds. Wildonger won two more matches by fall in the consolation bracket before falling in the fifth-place match.
At 157 pounds,
D.J. Mele picked up a third-place finish. Mele won two matches in the championship bracket and after dropping into the consolation round, he was awarded third place after Thiel's Austin Bonnaci forfeited.
A pair of freshmen made impressive debuts at 174 pounds.
Liam Frank finished as the runner-up and
Trenton Cook placed third. Frank won three matches, including a pin in 1:30 of his teammate Cook to reach the final. He fell 13-4 in the final to Sonnieboy Blanco of W&J. Cook, meanwhile, scored all three of his wins by fall. His third-place match win came in 4:33 over Jordan Julian of Middlesex.
285-pound
David Wuestner placed sixth. Wuestner advanced after an opening match pin and a forfeit. After falling in the consolation quarterfinals, Wuestner scored a pair of decisions over opponents from Heidelberg and West Liberty before being edged by Wheeling Jesuit's Maxwell Lacey, 3-1.Â
Millersville travels to Seton Hill to begin PSAC dual action on Sept. 19.
