Lock Haven erases deficit to beat Millersville, 29-17

Lock Haven, Pennsylvania - Millersville raced to a 10-0 lead in Saturday's PSAC East game at Lock Haven. But Lock Haven's Nysir Minney-Gratz changed the course of the game with a 98-yard kick return. From there, the Bald Eagles outscored the Marauders by 26 points for a 29-17 final.

Millersville (1-6, 0-4 PSAC East) held Lock Haven (2-5, 2-2 PSAC East) without an offensive touchdown in the first half and led 10-9 at the break. The first quarter was all Marauders with quarterback Tony Staffieri starting 5-for-5 through the air and running for a score while Lock Haven's Caleb Walton started 2-for-9 and threw an interception to P.J. Santos that was return to the Lock Haven 29, setting up an Evan Stahl 27-yard field goal that made the game 10-0.

But Minney-Gratz took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown, and after a Stahl 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked early in the second quarter, Lock Haven took control. Lock Haven out-gained Millersville 381-110 over the final three quarters including a fourth quarter in which Lock Haven held a 158-23 advantage in total yards and rushed for 105 while taking and preserving the lead.

Lock Haven took its first lead only two minutes into the third quarter when a 48-yard Ralph Hyland run set up a 3-yard TD run one play later. Santos managed to block a field goal to keep the game within one score and then made his second interception of the game with just under four minutes remaining in the third, setting up the Marauders' offense at the Lock Haven 28. The Marauders made two fourth down conversions and eventually scored on a 1-yard plunge by Staffieri, evening the game at 17-17.

Lock Haven immediately answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that took just 2:47 off the clock. Millersville's chance to tie ended when Staffieri was intercepted at the Lock Haven 10-yard line, and Lock Haven marched those 90 yards in eight plays--all of them rushes--to extend the lead.

Staffieri went 14-for-27 for 169 yards and he also gained 82 yards on the ground but was sacked eight times, cutting 56 yards off of his rushing total. Marcel Mingo led Millersville receivers with three catches for 56 yards.

Millersville hosts Shippensburg on Oct. 22, which is Homecoming Saturday.
