Shippensburg downs Millersville on Homecoming Saturday

Millersville, Pennsylvania - Cole Chiappialle scored a rushing, receiving and return touchdown to help Shippensburg top Millersville 43-9 Saturday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Chiappialle scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass just 1:29 into the game and added a 79-yard punt return with 1:46 remaining in the first as the Raiders scored 22 in the period and led 36-9 at the half. Shippensburg defeated Millersville for the 13th consecutive meeting and held its sixth consecutive opponent scoreless in the first half. Shippensburg out-gained Millersville 511-265 and rushed for 341 yards.

Trailing 12-0 in the first quarter, Millersville got on the board with 9:41 left in the first quarter when Tyrone Gibson caught a screen pass from J.J. Paige and ran untouched for 59 yards into the end zone. It was his first career touchdown. The Marauders added a 38-yard field goal from Evan Stahl on the first drive of the second quarter, making the score, 22-9. But Shippensburg controlled the rest of the half. The Raiders covered 65 yards in six plays on the next drive, which ended in a Justin Pyle touchdown run. The Raiders drove 77 yards on 11 plays its next possession and built the lead to 36-9 on a touchdown reception from Jeff Gulyas.

The Marauders' defense kept the Raiders in check in the second half, allowing just one score--a Chiappialle 5-yard run--in the opening minutes of the fourth. Millersville drove into Shippensburg territory three times in the second half but came up empty all three drives. The first ended on an interception in the red zone and the next two on downs.

J.J. Paige finished 14-for-31 for 190 yards on a windy day. Ship's two quarterbacks combined to go 11-for-20 with 170 yards. Marcel Mingo caught a career-high five passes for 44 yards.
