Disastrous Third Quarter Dooms Marauders

Millersville, Pa. – Millersville trailed by just three early in the third quarter and seemingly had all momentum on its side. But the Marauders were outscored 18-6 over the final eight-plus minutes of the period and the visiting Shippensburg Red Raiders pulled for a 74-58 win.

Shippensburg (13-2, 9-2 PSAC), now with the best record in the PSAC, won its eighth consecutive game behind by lopsided first and third quarters. The Raiders jumped out to a 25-13 lead and after the Marauders (8-6, 5-6 PSAC) chipped the deficit to three, Shippensburg answered with an 18-8 third quarter. It was Millersville's first double-digit loss of the season and only its second in seven home games. Millersville had not allowed more than 73 points all season and no more than 64 in its previous 11 games. Shippensburg has now won back-to-back games in Pucillo Gymnasium for the first time since 1994-95.

Millersville responded from a 12-point first quarter deficit by ripping off a 9-4 run over the final 4:39 of the second quarter. Shelby Reimer started the run with a 3-pointer and capped it with a jumper. Her second basket of the quarter pulled Millersville to within 39-36. Ship's Haley Scullion, who matched her career high with 16 points, hit a bucket on Ship's final possession of the half to give her team a 41-36 lead.

Aunjel Van Brakle scored the first points of the third quarter on fastbreak layup created by a steal. But the Marauders did not score again for four minutes and managed just two points over the next six. Millersville missed eight of their next nine shots and committed six turnovers in that span. Ship's Logan Snyder ended Millersville's nightmare of a quarter with a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left. That extended Ship's lead to 15.

It only got worse for the Marauders in the fourth as Shippensburg scored the first seven points and pushed the lead to 22 while Millersville committed two turnovers and missed three shots in the first four minutes. Millersville shot 34.5 percent in the second after shooting 48.3 percent in the first. Shippensburg connected on 51.8 percent of its shots, becoming the first team to shoot over 50 percent against Millersville this season.

The Marauders were led on offense by Celeste Robinson's 14 points and eight rebounds. Courtney Hinnant chipped in a season-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Millersville returns to the Pucillo Gymnasium hardwood Wednesday against Bloomsburg.
