Stout Bloomsburg Defense Frustrates Marauders
1/13/2016 9:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville men's basketball team came into Wednesday night's match-up with Bloomsburg as winners of 14 consecutive games over the Huskies in Pucillo Gymnasium. But the Huskies defense held Millersville to 36.4 percent (20-55) shooting from the floor and the home team dropped a 71-60 decision. The Marauders have dropped 13-straight and fall to 2-14 overall and 2-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Bloomsburg opened the scoring with a Christian Mortellite layup, but the Marauders immediately responded with a layup of their own via Markeith Mont. Both squads went on to trade buckets before Millersville built a four point advantage at the 8:20 mark in the first half. With the score deadlocked at 13, Tommy Patterson sunk a pair of free throws and a Husky turnover led to a Patterson layup in transition.
The Marauder lead was short-lived; Bloomsburg finished the first half on a 19-3 run as it went into the halftime break with a 32-20 advantage. The Huskies defense was especially sound against 3-pointers as it held the Ville to 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from distance. Tommy Patterson was the lone Marauder to hit a trey within the half.
The Huskies built their largest lead of the game in the second half (22) as they held a 56-34 advantage after a Donell Diggs trey with 10:39 remaining. Bloomsburg coasted from that point forward securing the 71-60 victory as it improves to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC.
Bloomsburg had a quartet of players finishing in double figures. Leading scorer Christian Morellite poured in a game-high 18 points. Forward Malik Garner recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Donell Diggs and Malik Sneed were the other Huskies who finished with 10-plus points at 12 and 13 points apiece.
The Marauders received 12 points from Tommy Patterson who hit 2-of-3 from three point range. Markeith Mont chipped in 12 points and corralled seven boards, while Shawn Williams added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Millersville returns to action for a road game against West Chester on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
