Millersville, Pa. - West Chester football used a balanced offensive effort to defeat Millersville 48-3 Saturday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The Golden Rams rushed for 255 yards and passed for 233 to score at least 35 points for the third week in a row. Entering the game as the No. 2 offense in the PSAC, West Chester (2-2, 1-0 PSAC East) received 59 yards receiving and two scores from All-America tight end Tim Brown. Eddie Elliot led the rushing attack with 94 yards, including a 64-yard TD run at the start of the third quarter.
Millersville (0-4, 0-1 PSAC East) held tough through the first quarter after giving up a touchdown on the first West Chester possession of the game. The Marauder defense forced a pair of punts, but just before the quarter ended, Pat Moriarty found Shannon Mayer for a 56-yard completion to the Millersville 1-yard-line. That play set-up a Jarel Elder TD run and started a 20-point quarter for the Golden Rams.
Millersville's offense, which was shut out a week ago at Slippery Rock, could not find the end zone again. Millersville's first eight possessions included six punts, a turnover on downs and an interception thrown by
J.J. Paige. Millersville put points on the board with 9:30 left in the third quarter when
Evan Stahl hit a career-long 47-yard field goal to make the score 34-3.
Millersville totaled 128 yards on the ground and was led by
Phil Overton's 69 yards on 16 carries. Paige rushed for 50 yards on 16 carries and went 10-for-22 for 74 yards through the air.
Rob Varner led the defense with 12 tackles.
Rasheed Johnson added 10, giving him double-digit stops for the third time this season.
P.J. Santos intercepted a pass in the second quarter, giving him three picks on the season. Millersville, which ranked first in the PSAC in sacks after three weeks, failed to record one for the first time this season.
Millersville travels to Kutztown next week for a 6:05 p.m. start.
