Erie, Pa. – In the first PSAC Crossover of the season, Millersville let 2-0 leads slip away first against Edinboro (25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 15-10), and later versus Mercyhurst (25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 17-25, 8-15).
Millersville entered the weekend after suffering its first loss and losing two key players in
Kayla Wallace and
Brittany Ford against Philadelphia Tuesday night. It is yet to be determined if Wallace or Ford will return this season, but the Marauders will have to march on short-handed for the time being.
Erin Harman had 27 kills on the night and
Grace Dawson contributed 73 assists in the two matches. After recording 45 digs on the night, senior
Brooklyn Smith is now eight shy of the all-time digs record at Millersville.
Edinboro 3, Millersville 2 Millersville controlled the match early, winning the first two sets before dropping the final three to the Fighting Scots. Harman and Kelsi Ceriana stood out, tallying 12 kills each with Harman adding 15 digs to the effort. Smith recorded a team-high 27 digs and
Grace Dawson set up the Marauders 40 times over the course of the match. Â
The first set was close early before Millersville pulled away late when
Taylor Smith stepped up to serve for three straight points and extended Millersville's lead to eight. The second set was a nail-biter that featured seven ties between the Marauders and Fighting Scots. With the score tied and momentum going Edinboro's way, Ceriana recorded back-to-back kills and winning the set. In set three, Edinboro began to establish its presence taking the lead at 3-2 and never relinquishing it. Set four was much like the second set, but this time the Fighting Scots would prevail despite Harman's five kills. The score was knotted at 15 when Morgan Sharp stepped up to serve, and Edinboro reeled off six points in a row on their way to a victorious set. In the fifth and final showdown, the Marauders could not overcome the Fighting Scots momentum as Edinboro earned the win. 15-10.
Mercyhurst 3, Millersville 2
The Marauders came out swinging against the Lakers, dominating set one. Harman tallied five kills in the set and Ceriana chipped in with four for a 25-16 win. The second set was much tighter than the first. With the score 10-9 in favor of the Marauders, Smith served for four consecutive points, and Millersville controlled the set the rest of the way. In the third set, Mercyhurst turned the tables and never trailed the entire set. The fourth set saw the teams knotted up as late as 14-14 in the game. It was after the next point that Erin Byrnes served for the Lakers and she scored four straight points on their way to evening the match. The fifth and decisive set was Mercyhurst's from the start as they led the entire set before Byrnes sent home a kill to seal the victory.
The Marauders face Slippery Rock (12:30 p.m.) and Gannon (6:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
