Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team produced its first winning record since 2004 as the Black & Gold look to build on their 9-6-2 season during the 2015 campaign.
The Marauders enter the 2015 season under new leadership as Millersville graduate and former men's soccer great
Matt Procopio was named head coach on Aug. 3. Procopio will lean on a veteran group of girls with 15 of the returnees having started at least one game including
Halie Parker,
Hannah Willett,
Alexandrea Powell and
Kaylie Cutlip who each started all 17 games a season ago.
As voted on by the conferences head coaches, Millersville was slotted 12th in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Polls. The Black & Gold return four of their top five scorers, including junior
Halie Parker who netted five goals and three assists a season ago. Classmate
Kady Yoders enjoyed a breakout season where she registered 10 points while appearing in all 17 matches. Senior
Megan Kelley started in the first seven games of the year before missing the rest of the season with a leg injury. During Kelley's time on the pitch she displayed brilliant chemistry with Kristen Lepley and
Halie Parker dishing out a total of three assists.
Procopio also expects solid contributions from the midfield as
Alexandrea Powell,
Meagan Newmister,
Logan Neiman and Stacie Halliman have the creativity and skill to produce quality goal scoring opportunities.
Millersville has two goalkeepers on the roster each of whom saw meaningful minutes during the 2014 season. Junior Samatha Wolfe has the most experience appearing in six games over the past two seasons. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Remely appeared in one match last season where she recorded three saves against Kutztown.
Defensively, the Marauders will be led by
Kaylie Cutlip and
Hannah Willett. Cutlip and Willett have started every game of their colligate careers to date as they helped the Marauders achieve eight shutouts in 2014, most since the 2002 season. Potential defensive partners along the squad's backline include
Emily Purcell,
Taylor Sprenkle,
Tori Sprenkle and
Victoria Kramer.
The Marauders hit the playing field for the first time on the road when it travels to Kutztown to square off against the nationally ranked Golden Bears. Kutztown posted a 15-5-1 record last year, highlighted by a school-record nine-game winning streak. It finished as the third seed in the final regular season PSAC standings, won two playoff games to advance to the conference final for the first time since 2011 and went on to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in six years.
The No. 25 ranked Golden Bears will have a much different look after graduating six players last year including an All-American forward. Key players to keep an eye out for during the match with the Marauders include Alaina Curry, Katie Jaxheimer, Hannah Oren, Diana Malanga and Sam Busillo. The PSAC matchup is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
