Millersville, Pa. - Chris Murphy added another prestigious award to his collegiate baseball resume on Wednesday when he was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year for the second time in his career. Murphy was joined by second baseman David Summerfield on the NCBWA All-Atlantic Region First Team, and Dan Stoltzfus, Chas McCormick and Brandon Miller landed second team recognition.
Five honorees for the Marauders are the most in program history. The NCBWA is one of three organizations that recognize all-region and All-America players. Murphy also won the NCBWA's region pitcher of the year award in 2013. Similarly, the 2015 player of the year, Nick Sell of Seton Hill, also won the player of the year award in 2013. As first team selections, Murphy and Summerfield advance to the national ballot for All-America consideration. Murphy was a NCBWA All-America First Team pick in 2013. Summerfield is the first Marauder second baseman to score all-region recognition.
Murphy was already named the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year after leading Division II in wins with an 11-0 record. He has won 15 consecutive decisions dating back to April of 2014. Murphy's 2.08 ERA was a team-best and ranked second in the PSAC. He tied with Miller for the league lead in innings pitched with 78 and struck out 64 with a .225 batting average against. Murphy gave up only 12 extra-base hits all season. He also logged five complete games. He ranks second in PSAC history with 32 wins in 36 decisions. He won the NCBWA Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year award six times and was national pitcher of the week three times in his career.
Summerfield enters the NCAA Atlantic Regional fourth in Division II in hitting with a .456 average. His 78 hits are just two away from the Millersville single-season record. He also ranks third on the team with 46 RBIs and his .510 on base percentage is a team-best.
Stoltzfus, McCormick and Miller are all-region for the first time in their careers. Stoltzfus's school-record-setting season of 14 homers and 76 RBIs was eclipsed only by an incredible season from IUP's Ryan Uhl, who hit 29 homers and drove in 75 runs in just 45 games. Stoltzfus' RBI total broke a record that was previously set by Matt Knox in 2000. He ranked second in the PSAC in RBIs, topped only by player of the year Sell. While Sell has already set a new PSAC mark, Stoltzfus is within four of the previous mark which has stood since 1989. Stoltzfus is also closing in on hall of famer Ryan Brink's total bases record. He is just eight shy of the 131 that Brink produced in 1998.
McCormick was an All-PSAC East First Team pick in the outfield. He exhibited the ability to hit for average and power and showed speed on the base paths. He hit .377 with 15 doubles, three triples, six homers and 58 RBIs. In the PSAC rankings, he was sixth in runs and hits, ninth in doubles, eighth in triples, fifth in RBIs and stolen bases and 11th in total bases. He was also perfect in 78 chances in the field. Only five players in the league produced a fielding percentage of 1.000 with at least 70 chances.
Miller's pitching numbers were among the best in the region and rivaled Murphy's. He matched Murphy's win total, going 11-1 with 11 consecutive wins. His 78 innings pitched led the league and he also ranked third in strikeouts with a team-high 76. He ranked third with a 2.19 ERA and posted a team-best .224 batting average against. Miller was an All-PSAC East First Team pick.
