Erie, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team conceded a late second period goal that forced overtime against the host Gannon University at Gannon University Field. The Golden Knights carried the momentum through the extra time, scoring two unanswered goals and won the PSAC showdown 15-13 on Tuesday afternoon.
Millersville (5-8, 2-6 PSAC) went into the halftime break with a 9-7 lead after scores from
Sabrina Fusco (3),
Bridget Hufnagel (2),
Kristen Butzner (2),
Madison Long and
Hannah Vogel in the first period. The Marauders closed the period on fire as they went on a 5-0 goal spurt.
In the second half and overtime period, Gannon (6-8, 3-6 PSAC) was paced by Tessa Mitchell and Leilani King who each scored hat tricks for the home team. Mitchell finished the game with a game-high seven goals. King tailed a game-high five assists for the Golden Knights.
Gannon tied the match with two early second half goals, but the Marauders were the beneficiaries of an own goal that put them up 10-9 with 24 minutes remaining in the game. Both teams would go on to produce two goal runs ending with a Fusco goal at the 3:13 mark that put Millersville up, 12-11.
The Black & Gold had the match in hand until Tessa Mitchell forced a
Shannon Davis turnover that resulted in the equalizing effort at the 1:13 mark. Mitchell went on to score the first goal of the overtime period putting the Golden Knights ahead by a 13-12 score. An unassisted effort was netted by Bridget Hufnagle evening the score at 13. Hufnagle finished the match with four goals.
Gannon was able to control the second three-minute overtime as it scored two goals to secure the 15-13 victory. The Golden Knights held a 33-22 advantage in shots, but the Marauders were more efficient placing 19 of the 22 on net.
Goalkeeper
Shannon Davis finished the contest with 11 saves in the loss as she now has a PSAC leading 140 saves on the 2015 season. Davis's .461 save percentage ranks second in the conference behind Bloomsburg keeper Brittney Hegarty.
Millersville returns to Chryst Field on Friday, April 17 as it hosts Slippery Rock. First draw control is set for 4 p.m.
