East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team exploded for 14 goals in the first half, and that alone was enough to power head coach
Mia Hall's squad to a decisive 17-14 victory over East Stroudsburg Tuesday afternoon.
The 14 first half goals were Millersville's most in a period since a 25-2 win over Alderson-Broaddus in March 2014. The Marauders now are 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. Meanwhile ESU was handed its first loss of the season, falling to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC.
The Marauders got on the board first with a goal from
Sabrina Fusco just 11 seconds into the match. After claiming the 1-0 lead, Millersville put four more goals on the board in less than nine minutes, including another by Fusco, a free position score by
Abby Mack, a breakaway attempt by
Renee Landis, and a sweet combination attempt by
Bridget Hufnagel that was assisted by Fusco. The Marauders continued the scoring spree adding another three before the Warriors were finally able to get on the board at the 17:27 mark making it an 8-1 affair.
From that point, Millersville was on cruise control. The away team scored six more goals to close the half with a 14-3 advantage. The Warriors scored first in the second half to make the score 15-3, but the Black & Gold responded as
Taylor Davis tallied her second goal of the day to make the lead 12 again with just over 25 minutes left in the second period.
East Stroudsburg mounted a furious second half rally scoring 11 goals in the final 17 minutes of action, but it was too little too late as the Marauders held on for the 17-14 victory. The Warriors were paced by Lauren Nunes who had a game high nine points including four goals.
Freshman
Sabrina Fusco had her best game since the opening match against Holy Family, as she had a team high six points including four goals scored. Fusco now leads the team with 19 goals through six matches and is one point shy of the team lead in points as she trails
Renee Landis who has recorded 26 on the season.
Goalkeeper
Shannon Davis was outstanding between the pipes saving a game high 15 shots, which marked the third time in her young career that she has saved 10 plus shots in goal.
Putting the win over the Warriors in the rearview mirror, Millersville now turns its attention to another formidable PSAC opponent, Indiana (Pa.). The Marauders and the Crimson Hawks clash at George P. Miller Stadium on March 24 with a 4 p.m. start time.
