Mansfield, Pa. - Four players in double figures and a strong defensive effort on Mansfield star Joe Bell led the Millersville men's basketball team to a 60-56 win Wednesday evening--its first at Mansfield since 2008.
The Marauders (12-11, 8-9 PSAC) scored its second consecutive win overall and ended a six-game losing streak in Decker Gymnasium. It was Millersville's seventh win in the building since 1996. The four-point margin also continued a recent trend as each of the last six meetings between the teams have been decided by single digits.
The Marauders' interior players
Anthony Moe and
Eddie Callender overcame foul trouble to produce efficient offensive performances. Moe totaled 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed nine boards. Callender scored 10 on 3-of-5 shooting and added six rebounds. But most importantly, the duo stymied Bell, who entered the game fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 17.7 points per game and had a long history of big games against the Marauders.
Bell carried an average of 24.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in seven career games against Millersville, but he was held to just two points and four rebounds while shooting 1-of-9 from the field. Millersville's defense has held to consecutive opponents to fewer than 60 points and improved the team's record to 7-0 when holding its opponent under 70.
The game, however, wasn't decided until the final seconds. Millersville led by nine (48-39) following
Sam Light's jumper with 9:11 to play. That lead was quickly erased with a 7-1 run from the Mountaineers.
Tavon Parker briefly stemmed the tied with a basket, but Thomas Moore retaliated with five consecutive points, giving Mansfield a 53-51 advantage with three minutes left.
With only 58 seconds remaining, Charles Pemberton put his Mansfield club up 56-55, but Parker found Moe at the other end for a go-ahead basket 16 seconds later. Millersville the leaned on its defense, forcing Mansfield into turnovers on its next three possessions.
Shawn Williams hit a pair of crucial free throws to extend the lead to three with 24 ticks left, and Callender added another, putting the game out of reach.
Williams and Parker both finished with 10 points. Millersville shot 47.7 percent from the field while holding Mansfield to 36.4 percent shooting.
The Marauders return home to host Kutztown on Saturday.
